First some facts...

How long to build it? It was about a year and a half of planning, building and photographing.

How many pieces of LEGO to build it? More than 75,000

How big is it? About 7 feet by 5 1/2 feet by 30 inches

How many LEGO people does it seat? 1372

How many windows? 3976

It features a balcony, a vestibule, stairs to the balcony, restrooms, coat rooms, several mosaics, a baptism area, an altar, a crucifix, a pulpit and an elaborate pipe organ.

Well they had an exhibit of these models last year at the Orange County Fair, and my brother got talking to some of the guys that were working, and they're all a part of some international Lego model building club that basically anyone can join. I think. But then yeah, you have the guys that work for Lego and do these things every day.

As for the actual model building, I've been involved in a few of these projects myself - my brother and I have done castles and a sailing ship and Lord of the Rings sets, which usually come out of incredibly geeky conversations and "Oh my god that would be so freaking cool!" and they just sort of take on lives of their own. Of course, having enough pieces is a little difficult, even for a devout Lego collector like my brother, but if you go to the Lego store in Downtown Disney they have a section where you can buy buckets of certain bits in a bunch of different colours, which has made things incredibly easier.

I've been to the Lego store at Downtown Disney -- fun stuff, and yes, being able to buy the individual colors has to make building these bigger projects easier. That's interesting about the club. Some talented people involved there.

When I was little, they used to have lego displays at the Myers centre in the city - an entire floor of themed lego exhibitions.

I went the year they did dinosaurs. Nothing like a huge stegosaurous made of tiny tiny blocks to make you appreciate patience.

Have you seen the Lord of the Rings battle scene someone made? It was perfect! I *may* have the link at home, but certainly not at work.

Also, your previous convo about the Disney Lego store reminds me a bit of a story from a co-worker who went to Disney World for his honeymoon and told the lady at the Lego store there it was the best day of his life to be at the Lego store. His wife just rolled her eyes.

Yeah, apparently Mike had saved money to go to the Lego store and buy things he couldn't get anywhere else and when he put his stuff on the counter to pay, the woman asked if he was having a good time and his response was, "Lady, this is the best day of my life and I'm on my honeymoon." Her response was something about how understanding his wife must be. She is. I've met her several times.
