Mega-drabble: 'And So To Bed' (Jack/Anamaria - PG)

Here’s another one for the ‘Bed’ challenge, longer at 430 words or so. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hereswith for the beta work!

It’s sequelish to a couple of short post-CotBP things I wrote in 2005, 'A Fine Day', and ‘A Word in Private

And here’s the new one…

~ And So To Bed ~

"You get some sleep," Ana'd told Jack, and took herself and his half-eaten dinner off to the galley. Considerably later, she went back out on deck, and Cotton, at the wheel, gave a significant nod toward the bow.

Bloody Hell!

Jack was lounging in a big coil of rope, nursing a bottle and staring out at the moonlit sea.

She stalked across the deck, gave the coil of rope a kick, and snapped, "What the devil? You'll be good for nothin' tomorrow, Jack!"

He glanced sideways at her, a bit bleary-eyed. "Couldn't sleep, love."

“Yer dead on yer feet!”

“Ain’t on me feet.”

“You’ve a perfectly good bed in there!”

He put the bottle to his lips, drank deep, then wiped his mouth. “Was thinkin’ about that, actually.”

She frowned. “Thinkin’ about yer bed?”

“Aye.” He hesitated, but then gave a shrug. “’Bout the last time I slept in it.”

The last time… Ana’s frown turned to a scowl. She said, slowly, “They came for you there.”

Jack said nothing, just took another swig of rum.

She sat on the edge of the rope coil. Near, but not touching. Presently, he offered her the bottle. She accepted it. It was good rum, the burn of it easing to a warm glow as it traveled down her gullet. She handed the bottle back. “What about a lullaby?”

He nearly choked on the liquor. “A—“

“Lullaby.” She smiled. “I put my sister’s boy to bed, sometimes, when I visit. He seems to like it.”

Jack began to chuckle, with real amusement, his shadows fading. He said, at last, “You’d do that for me?”

Ana swiped the bottle out of his hand again. “This once. Aye.”

She set the bottle down on the deck, got up, and was pleased to see him lift his hand, silently asking for assistance. She took it – warm, but for those rings, and fine-boned but toughened and strong, and too clever, as she well knew – and pulled him to his feet. She told him, as he swayed there before her, “Don’t get any ideas, now.”

He widened those eyes, and gave her that pretty pout. But then he changed tactics. “A story, too?”

“A story! Well, maybe. If you’re good.”

“Good?” He picked up his bottle, and raised it to her in a tipsy salute. “I’m always good, love. Even better than good. Don’t you remember?”

“That’s what I meant,” Ana said, dryly, and took him back to his cabin.

Um, nice, um *coughs* description of his hands, mate. *fans self* See, I knew you'd come up with more for this prompt. Yeah! "Ain't on me feet." hahahaha! And there's that mutiny theme again. Very good! I love this - off to read the 'old' stuff you linked!

Thank you! Yes... the hands!

*pauses to contemplate*

Yes, I had to write this one, too, and there may be others, we'll see. Those plot bunnies!

I'm so glad you liked it!

This is cute!

Thanks for the chuckle.

My lands! You write Jack & Ana interactions so well, I can't picture them doing so in any other manner.

Thanks so much! I started out reading a lot of Jack/Ana when I first discovered PotC fanfic -- there were many authors that wrote it, back then. It's still a lot of fun -- she's an interesting character. I'm so glad you enjoyed this!

Jack/Ana used to be one of my favorite pairings, and I've written quite a bit of her, over the years (though less since DMC came out). It's fun to revisit those early days, and the slightly different (and less angsty) vision we got of the characters. Thank you for the feedback -- I really appreciate it!

I just got this incredibly wistful imagery hitting my brain along with this bit: "Jack was lounging in a big coil of rope, nursing a bottle and staring out at the moonlit sea."

Thanks for that :)

*blushes* Thanks so much! And I totally agree about Jack and Ana -- they were pretty much my favorite thing to read when I first discovered the fandom.

Oh, it's been a while since I've seen Jack/Ana fic! *claps hands*

Perfect mix of angst and humor here. And I like the idea of Ana going and visiting her sister and nephew. So cute.

“I’m always good, love. Even better than good. Don’t you remember?” -- Oh, Jack, leave it to you to take a perfectly innocent comment.... :)

Great drabble!!

Jack/Ana is always fun. I don't see why she shouldn't have a sister and nephew, either. :)) Glad you enjoyed this!

Now that put a BIG smile on my face. :)

The scene was so clear... just how I picture Jack and Ana together... just the right amount of seriousness and humour.

Great stuff! Thanks. :)

Ana knows him all too well! But she's not fooled for a second. I like the comraderie here. You write her so well.

Thank you so much! Ana's not easily fooled twice. That one time with the boat was plenty.

[identity profile] p0wdermonkey.livejournal.com 2008-04-19 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Loved that. There's so much going on between these two, balanced between caring and teasing, seduction and innocence. Plus, I always love it when someone tries to look after Jack and manages to do it in such a way that he can accept it - not an easy trick to pull off, but you and Ana did it beautifully.

I do love writing Jack/Ana occasionally. That "caring and teasing, seduction and innocence" seems to be a feature of most of the J/A stories I love. I'm so glad you enjoyed this! Thank you for letting me know.

Probably -- I've written quite a lot of Jack/Ana, and some Jack/Ana/Norrington (though nothing explicit) and even a Jack/Ana/Elizabeth (more explicit, but still only soft R). They're all in my LJ memories.

Glad you liked Slow Dance. :)

No. I have a lot, but not all -- and some I use very rarely.

Of course Ana figures things out. Much to clever for her own good, she is. :-) I read all three of these just now, and I must say, they were really great. Lovely, lovely work. :-D

Thank you! Anamaria was such a great character, it's really a shame she wasn't in the sequels. But it's fun revisiting those more carefree post-CotBP days, too.

[identity profile] honorat.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*happy dance happy dance* You're writing Jack/Anamaria again. My favourite! I think those old stories you linked were the cheif influence in my seeing them as an intriguing pairing. I love all the history implied in this--those two have such a past. And as others have said, your Jack hands description is to drool over, as is Jack the seductor/little boy--what a combination--and how irresistable!

After having spent the weekend at the Stollery Children's Hospital with a baby whose kidney had blocked off and blown up to more than half his abdomen, I needed the fluff of CotBP fic!

I wanted to reply at work, but they've blocked LJ. :(( I hope your little one is OK now -- and those words really don't express at all the shock and dismay I felt when I opened the email with your comment.

*hugs you, and baby (very gently)*

I'm so happy you enjoyed this little snippet of Jack and Ana. They are fun to write, as you know, being the bestest at it as you are! Thank you for letting me know you enjoyed it.

The MiniRat got a nice ambulence ride in a blizzard and has now sprung a leak--he has a drain in his side with a tube into his diaper. In a month he'll have to have a permanent repair which will require surgically removing the obstruction and reattaching the ureter to the kidney. At least now he is happy and bouncing again and not a little limp sock with a 103 fever.

I drew that picture while he was in the NICU, editing out the NG tube and cardiac leads. The photo was taken just after his bath, which he has always loved. He was about a month old.

He is doing well at the moment. Thanks for the hugs.

Bah! 4 a.m. grammar :(

That's what I thought. Good that he has practical Anamaria to help him over that hump.
