Backstory Drabble 17: 'Dear Departed' (J/E etc. - G)

This one, though it's more sweet than bitter, really does qualify for the current drabble challenge prompt, 'The Dead'. 150 words, set at Shipwreck Cove, with thanks again to [livejournal.com profile] hereswith for looking it over.

~ Dear Departed ~

Teague was strolling about the common room, showing off Elizabeth's son, Jamie, six months old now and displaying, amid smiles and gurgling laughter, a brand new tooth - his first.

"Application of strong rum was called for, direct on the gums. Jack and Lizzie were at wit's end with the lad's fussing. Had to step in. I'm an old hand at this sort of thing."

Over at a corner table, half in shadow, Jack shook his head sadly. "Yet another incident I'll never live down."

Elizabeth smiled, but said, wistfully, "I don't mind it. I only wish my father had had his chance."

Jack patted her hand, and gave it a light squeeze. "D'you think he would've known about the trick with the rum?"

"Maybe. But it would have been the finest cognac, rather than rum." And she lifted her tankard in a salute to the dear, very dear departed.

Oh geez louise, that last line is utterly drop dead fine. That is to say, so sweet that Elisabeth would include her father in this very very sweet moment. And that Jack would be so dear about it. Just darlin', darlin'!

This is so sweet! There's something very cozy about this scene of Jack, Teague and Elizabeth.

Aw, what a nice family moment. Nothing like having your loved ones around when you decide to take time out and remember the ones that aren't there anymore. I like how you describe her as "wistful" rather than sad. It seems like she's accepted her father's death and is recovering from all the horrors that happened to her, although she still misses him greatly, as well she should.

A very beautiful family scene - with the dear departed living in the memory of those who are still alive. Wonderful drabble.
