Drabble: 'Grudge Match' (Norrington, Sparrow - G)
My dear
porridgebird drew our attention to the fact that the word of the day on Dictionary.com was Flagitious, a piratical word if there ever was one (there were numerous examples of its use in the early days of the fandom). Of course fic had to be written, and conveniently
potc100 picked it up as a prompt.
~ Grudge Match ~
Dawn was breaking, painting the sky with what should have seemed Heavenly splendor. The curve of the sun peeped over the horizon, the pale gold of its rays penetrating his skull like blades. James briefly closed his eyes, stifling a moan. His stoicism was to no avail, however.
“Feeling a trifle under the weather this morning are we, Former Commodore Norrington?”
Sparrow’s spurious sympathy was delivered in that loathsome purr of his. James clenched his teeth, but the man’s next words and actions crossed the line.
“An’ what’s this here rat’s nest?”
The wig, which had admittedly seen better days, was snatched from James’s head. His eyes flew open in spite of the horrid sun and he rasped, “Sparrow! You flagitious reprobate!”
“That’s Captain Sparrow, flagitious reprobate, to you, mate.” Sparrow swayed, his expression dark with amusement, and with something more sinister. “Flagitious,” he repeated. “I rather like that. P’rhaps I should show you just how flagitious I can be, in a more private setting.”
“You dare—“ James began, then gaped as Sparrow tossed the wig backward, over his shoulder, to splat on the deck.
“Or maybe not,” Sparrow snapped. “There’s your swab, ex-commodore. Get to it!”

Thanks, too, for the reminder of the early days of this fandom. Ah, memories.

James' suffering, your evocative use of language, and Sparrow's dark side all filled me with glee!
Splat.

(I have no wig avatar. You'll have to settle for hairporn.)

I do very much enjoy the snark that goes on between Jack and James. Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

Good banter all round! Jack seems to love nothing better than to do a bit o' grinding of the bootheel when the opportune moment arrives. Fair to say, if the tables were turned, it wouldn't be much different.
Good stuff!! No reason why this has to be just a representative of the good old days. We're the same people, and the same fandom... no reason why it can't be picked up where it was left off!

Jack and James are too much fun to write. One can "hear" them so easily, too.
Thank you for letting me know you enjoyed it!

This does play like a "missing scene" from DMC -- slotted in right before the "builds character" bit that was in T&T's script, but never made it into the final film...
And a "poor James" is in order, too ... never thought what it would be like having to swab the deck in the sun, when you're nursing the mother of all hangovers! ;-)
Fantastic drabble! Perfect characterisations, and snappy dialogue! What more can a reader want? (Besides more of the same!) ;-)
Great work!

So does James, when the boot's on the other foot. They are too much fun. And that wig had already been much-abused by TnT -- time to end its misery, for sure. Thank you for reading and for the wonderful comments! I really appreciate it.

Gosh and golly, I don't know this 'tradition' but it feels like a highly worthy one to have been established and honored by this wonderful bit of fluffy-grumpy!
You couldn't have done better, voices and actions, by these two darling ones (or three really, just learning to honor the wiggage)--
“Or maybe not...Get to it!” Thank you for the treat, tons much better than those 100 cal Oreo flakes I'm devoting myself to.

Praise from Willofthewisp
(Anonymous) 2010-01-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)Absolutely love Jack's response to being called a flagitious reprobate. And that wig. Good lord, that wig. Of course it had to go. It makes more sense that it was Jack's idea to use it as a wet-rag instead of James'. The man still has some of his pride left.
Re: Praise from Willofthewisp
James was pretty snarky to Jack from the start, back on the dock at Port Royal. With that and the state of that wig, how could Jack resist?
Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

Hee! Only Norrington could consider it loathsome!
Pitch-perfect missing bit - it's so good to hear them snarking at each other!

Your icon cracks me up. That wig, it had to go.
