Drabble: The Right Words

A hundred words, including the title, for the current [livejournal.com profile] potc100 challenge, "Farewell"...

~ The Right Words ~

What sort of farewell was suitable for such an occasion? Parting from one who was not only a recent comrade-in-arms, but the son of an old friend. One who'd given all in an effort to do right by ol' Jack! A bit startling, that. Not precisely unprecedented, but... unusual. A rarity. Something of an oddity. But that was a Turner for you. Came through, in the end, regardless of the sacrifice involved. Profound thanks were certainly in order -- but later. When he wasn't so rushed. A briefer encomium would have to suffice:

"Will... nice hat!"

Jack likes those ten dollar words. *G* Glad you enjoyed!

"I think we've all arrived at a very special place, eh?....grammatically?" ;)

Exactly! *G*

So nice! That line had always sparked a bit of curiosity in me - because, after all, Will certainly deserved more! Very nice job of explaning it.

Thanks! I'm sure Jack would've said all that was proper if Norrington and his little battalion of Marines hadn't been hovering on the brink of foiling his escape. As it was, he said the first thing that came to mind. That hat was pretty special. ;)

You don't happen to have a particular fondness for that hat, do you? ;)

I do love my Really Big Hat [livejournal.com profile] honorat gave me. :D

Yay! The Hat! This is excellent. I've always thought of those final addresses of Jack to Elizabeth and Will as smoke screen goodbyes. After all, he can't really announce that he's leaving! reminds self to finish fic conversation between Will and Jack about boats and hats

he can't really announce that he's leaving!

Well, it's pretty obvious, but the strangeness of his goodbyes was definitely a smokescreen sort of thing. Glad you liked this!

And yes, finish the boat/hat fic. And... more Crossing? *begs*

[identity profile] honorat.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that if it had been obvious he was leaving, they would have shot him. The only reason those marines were so relaxed, content to hold their circle and let the pirate roam around, was that they were sure they had him trapped. Jack was talking a mile a minute, whatever nonsense came to his head, to keep them from coming to the conclusion that he'd risk death and jump.

Crossing is hung up on too little time and inspiration at the moment.

Well, that's true -- they probably didn't expect him to jump. Hadn't thought about that (lately) as it seems like such a crazy Jackish thing to do and why wouldn't they think so too?

Boo for lack of time -- and inspiration! ACK! We are all biting our nails waiting for Jack's trap to spring. Have some tea. Watch CotBP when you get a chance.

Or a little more Kidnap Caper wouldn't come amiss...

LOL! That's so Jack. Just so very Jack.

His exit is classic Jack -- strange enough to make Norrington's boys pity him instead of shoot him. Glad you enjoyed!

[identity profile] hendercats.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent!! It always struck me that he had so much to say to Will but (of course!) no time to express it (and certainly no desire to do so in front of that audience, it having to do with feelings and other things behind the mask), and that was what raced through his head in the pause ... that the "nice hat" was the result of his realizing it was impossible to say to Will what really needed to be said. Applause to you for putting it all so well!

Exactly what I have always thought! No time, gotta run before Norrie, et al, wake up.

So happy you enjoyed the drabble!

Perfect Jack! Right down to the word that sent me scrambling to dictionary.com. (I love having to go to the dictionary - truly - thank you!) The things I learn in fandom - encomium, tribade....

Thanks so much! As for scrambling for dictionary.com, I had to look up tribade and what an interesting can of worms that opened up, LOL! You are evOl. ;)

Yeah, I kind of threw that in there on purpose. *g* (My favorite Buffy writer used in once - a pre-turned Spike said it - and I thought it was a great word.)

It's an odd comment, and it's meant to make us laugh, I suppose, but there's surely something more behind it, just like you describe it here. He couldn't possibly say what he really felt, to Will or Elizabeth, with the situation being what it was. I especially liked this: But that was a Turner for you. Came through, in the end, regardless of the sacrifice involved. And your Jack voice is wonderful, as usual, you write him so well :-) Great work!
