Drabble: 'Belle'
Mar. 29th, 2007 02:31 pmThe current drabble challenge theme at Black Pearl Sails is...
~ Belle ~
Bloody Turners. Jack pushed the end of Will’s sword aside and, holding onto his temper with both hands (really, it was too much, asking him to deal with a Bloody Turner after the ordeal he’d just been through), pulled the drawing of the key from his pocket and spread it for the whelp’s perusal. “William,” he said, with Infinite Patience, “I shall trade you the Compass, if you will help me to find this.”
Will looked entirely baffled – an expression typical of Bloody Turners. He was Bootstrap’s get, all right. He said, “You want me to find this?”
“No,” Jack replied. Infinite Patience. “You want you to find this. Because the finding of this finds you incapacitorially finding and/or locating and discovering the detecting of a way to save your dolly belle ol'... what's ‘er face. Savvy?”
Jack resisted the urge to both shiver and smack himself. What’s ‘er face, indeed. Miss Elizabeth Bloody-Minded Face-of-an-Angel Soul-of-a-Pirate Swann. Dream and nightmare rolled into one maddening, gorgeous girl. GIRL. He was old enough to be her FATHER. Well, possibly. Nearly, at least. And she was certainly a babe in arms to his hoary hoard of Vast Experience. He knew this, and it DIDN’T MATTER. She made him new, somehow. And scared him to death.
How he wished she would GO AWAY.
Except… not really.
Bloody Whip-out-his-sword-at-the-drop-of-a-hat Turner was speaking again.
“This is going to save Elizabeth?”
Save Elizabeth? Did the whelp not know her at all? Jack got a grip, forcibly shoving his mental image of the delectable and extremely capable Miss Swann behind him, and addressed the little problem at hand. “How much do you know about Davy Jones?”
“Not much.”
Of course not. And explanations were always so tedious. Two bloody Turners: Will would be safe as houses, and Davy Jones wouldn’t stand a chance. “Yeah,” Jack said. “It's gonna save Elizabeth.”

Date: 2007-03-29 10:08 pm (UTC)Is there any scarier place than Jack's mind? I've come to a conclusion--the reason why he sways so much is because he thinks in so many circles. Gotta be!!
Hats off to anyone who can get Jack this well.
Thanx

Date: 2007-03-29 10:37 pm (UTC)Wonderful piece of writing. You wrote Jack very well. I liked how fed up he was with Will. And his feelings towards Ms. Swann were quite complex at the moment.
I was giggling throughout the whole thing.
"Jack pushed the end of Will’s sword aside and, holding onto his temper with both (metaphorical) hands (really, it was too much, asking him to deal with a Bloody Turner after the ordeal he’d just been through)"
"Infinite Patience."
"Miss Elizabeth Bloody-Minded Face-of-an-Angel Soul-of-a-Pirate Swann. Dream and nightmare rolled into one maddening, gorgeous girl. GIRL. He was old enough to be her FATHER."
"Bloody Whip-out-his-sword-at-the-drop-of-a-hat Turner was speaking again."
"Will would be safe as houses, and Davy Jones wouldn’t stand a chance."
Hahaha. Thank you for this delightful read! Job well done. :)

Date: 2007-03-29 11:08 pm (UTC)Hee! Not quite the brightest in the bunch, those Turners (though Will did figure out how to locate the key, later). I think one of the big disappointments of DMC was Bootstrap's being not as bright as
Impverse BillI'd hoped.Infinite Patience
Marvelous! Makes me all bouncy, as does:
Miss Elizabeth Bloody-Minded Face-of-an-Angel Soul-of-a-Pirate Swann.
Will would be safe as houses, and Davy Jones wouldn’t stand a chance.
*adores you for this*
So wonderful to see you writing absolutely dead-on perfect Jack again.

Date: 2007-03-29 11:12 pm (UTC)I never said Jack wasn't full of deviousness and self-interest. It's a good thing he's cute, and funny, too.
Glad you enjoyed!

Date: 2007-03-30 12:01 am (UTC)Did you read the USA Today article a couple of weeks ago that quote Gore Verbinski as saying something to the effect of "if you thought his brain was sunburned before, it's fried now."?

Date: 2007-03-30 12:37 am (UTC)I really enjoyed this, as always. Spot-on Jack. I love realizing again, and again just how much his actions throughout DMC were motivated by Elizabeth, whether he'd admit it, or not.

Date: 2007-03-30 01:35 am (UTC)There was certainly no profit in it, and considerable peril, as he ended up discovering. But the compass doesn't lie, even if you want it to. ;)
Thank you so much for reading and commenting -- I'm glad you enjoyed this!
