Niece [livejournal.com profile] gingersnapps is a Harry Potter fan and recently read and adored [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo's wonderful Cedric/Hermione fic, Finding Himself. Now she is wondering if there is other great HP fic out there. Can any of you point the way to some of the best HP stories?

On a different note, [livejournal.com profile] erinya wanted to make some icons from the pics in my previous post, so I zipped up the original batch, which includes some that are almost 4,000 pixels wide, and sent it via www.yousendit.com. I get a hundred downloads off the link, so if anyone else wants them, be my guest!

Urk. There's some excellent HP fic out there, in fact way too much. My knowledge is pretty limited, really, but if you narrow that request a bit I might be able to suggest a few fics/authors... particular characters, pairings, time frames, genres she might prefer? [livejournal.com profile] inell writes a lot of different Hermione pairings, for instance, and she tags them well so they're findable. But I know more good fics/authors in the slash genre than in gen or het.

I don't read that much HP fic these days, and those I do read are limited to a few particular pairings, but what does she like? Maybe I can think of something. Off the top of my head, [livejournal.com profile] rozarka, who's on my flist, writes wonderful HP fics, mostly Viktor/Hermione, but other pairings, too, and she has a couple of Cedric/Hermione ones.

I've got a whole list of great HP fanfic. ... a lot of it is pretty smutty, though. I dunno what exactly Ginger would like >.> I agree with the above: narrow it down for me? X3

Hmm, like everyone said, it's hard to recommend anything specific without knowing more about her tastes...most of my favourite HP fics have come off The Sugarquill. The majority follow R/Hr and H/G, but there are plenty of other ships, too. If she likes novels, she might enjoy After the End. It's AU since OotP, but still an amazing story =)

Thanks so much! I know so little about the HP fandom that I wasn't even sure where to start looking for the best stories (although I suppose there are [livejournal.com profile] crack_van recs, etc.), so I really appreciate the help.

I think if it's well written -- good plot and characterization -- she's pretty open as far as preferences. I'm thinking she'd prefer het over slash, but if the slash is well-written she'd probably give it a look.

I know that a lot of her stories are slash, but [livejournal.com profile] pica_scribit's HP fanfic is fantastic - she's very meticulous about making sure her readers are well-informed as to possible content (i.e. her headers are full & each chapter has the appropriate rating, with warnings in the headers of early chapters if later ones have a higher age rating). She's also done a lot of work with either re-aligning stories when new revelations are made in canon, or in making it very clear where things diverge.

...and stories such as M.A.R.Y.S.U.E. Must Die (http://www.skjaere.me.uk/fanfic/marysue01.html) really should be required reading ;-)

What does she want to read in the HP fandom? There is a ton of it out there. I am part of the Draco/Hermione comm and friends with some really good writers. My darling [livejournal.com profile] bunney has written some wonderful stories. Also a ton of Hermione and Snape fics...

Here is a link to some great Draco/Hermione fics: http://raffyv.livejournal.com/2412.html
Raffy tries to keep the list updated:)

[livejournal.com profile] inell writes a lot of one shots, mostly smutty, all with Hermione in it. Though she mostly RPs now.

I don't read a lot of slash but there is a ton of it..just depends on what pairing she is looking for, Harry/Draco, Harry/Snape, Remus/Sirius, etc. It is a big fandom with tons of fics.

Hope this helps and thanks for the pics too darling!!

Thank you so much for the input. I'm sure she'll check out the link. I don't think she has a specific preference, which makes it difficult, but I figured some of those on my flist would know which are the best stories.

Thank you so much for the input. I don't think she has real specific preferences, but I'm pretty sure she'd prefer het pairings (though, like me, she probably wouldn't be opposed to slash, if it's really well written). I'm sure she'll enjoy checking out [livejournal.com profile] inell's work.

I would bet she'd like most anything that you enjoy. She's just looking for good stories, not particular pairings. Thanks for the suggestion about [livejournal.com profile] rozarka -- I'm sure she'll enjoy taking a peek.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] florahart writes a wide variety of pairings, including some het, and is a good and prolific author. The [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom is the HP-specific recs comm, a la [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, so that's definitely worth a look too!

I'm not into Harry Potter so I can't help you there, I'm afraid.

I tried clicking on the link to the zipped up pics, and got sent to a Harry Potter fic. Want shiny pirates, please please, pretty pretty please?? {Puts on innocent kitten eyes}

Hrm, most of what I have is slash XD I watch a Snape/Lupin community, and I get most of my fics from there >.>

However, here's a few cute or neat ones that I've come across, almost entirely non-smutty, if I recall correctly.

Luna/Ron, 1sentence
http://the-ruiner.livejournal.com/14797.html

Tom Riddle/McGonagall, 1sentence
http://community.livejournal.com/annettefanfic/20105.html

Darkfic, Arthur
http://miggy.livejournal.com/555572.html

Albus, omgsad!
http://cluegirl.livejournal.com/305101.html

Alice Longbottom, insanity
http://community.livejournal.com/femgenficathon/24697.html

And if she doesn't mind a little slash, here's a couple I really love:

http://busaikko.livejournal.com/51961.html (AU but oh so sweet/sad!!)
http://community.livejournal.com/lupin_snape/924764.html (extremely well-written, but warning: sad, with a hopeful ending, title is Methods of Suicide)
http://snegurochka.slashcity.net/fics/habit1.html (longer fic by my fav author ever, relatively smutty, but the plot is intelligent and characterization beautiful-- also, this links to the third part in a series, but you don't have to read the first two parts to "get" this part-- and this is the part with the real meat of the plot ^^ )
http://snegurochka-lee.livejournal.com/141134.html (middle-aged attempts at D/s XD it's adorably funny)

Durr, there was also a Hermione/Cedric one I read a while ago that was clever, if a bit long... I'll give a hunt for it when I get home from work.

Thank you so much for the recs, and for giving my niece so much enjoyment with your wonderful Finding Himself -- it was truly her crack for a while, and at a time when she really needed some. I keep telling her to email you to tell you how much she enjoyed it, but she wants to say something "really intelligent" about it, and hasn't been able to formulate this paean, to date. I tell her that authors enjoy simple reviews, too, like "YOU ROCK!", or whatever, but so far I haven't convinced her. Anyway, many hugs from both of us for your brilliance and hard work!

I'd give you some recs, but I mostly read slash and I'm not sure Ginger would be into that.

If she doesn't mind a bit of extremely hot boysex, Emma Grant's work is all wonderful, especially Left My Heart and Surrender the Grey.

if these tickle her fancy, I can trow a few more her way too.

You can find Sam's "Stealing Harry" stories at his story lj [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller. All of his stuff is incredible. Pass the link on to Ginger by all means, but do yourself a favor and read some of his stuff for yourself too. He is one of the best fanfic writers there is.

It took me a while to catch on to the art of feedback, and even now I don't always have time to give the detailed comments some stories deserve. But as an author myself, it's even good just to know people are reading -- and yes, how they connect with the story. I find negative feedback really useful, I have to say. I've only gotten a few reviews that were critical of some element of a story, but I think I was able to make improvements to my characterizations because of them.
