Happy Norrington Drabble: 'Not a Dream'

Enough with the angst. Here's 125 words of A/U Norrington, set the morning after my old fic, True Heart, though you probably don't need to have read that to understand what's going on here. I wrote that first, longer story for a Secret Santa exchange, per erinya's request, and hereswith's, too. This drabble's for hereswith, who wanted some N/E, and probably not the angst of last night's offering, and for the 'Wait' drabble challenge at blackpearlsails.



~ Not a Dream ~


Late morning sun woke him, and he wondered if it had all been a dream. Elizabeth… breaking into the house… confronting him… seducing him… the brandy… the Turkey carpet… her skin, her slender form by firelight, beneath his hands…

He lifted one of said hands. Bare. His signet ring slipped onto hers just before dawn, after he'd walked her back to her father's house.

And her scent still lingered upon his fingers.

A dream indeed.

How long had he been wandering in darkness?

But Elizabeth—his Elizabeth, so cherished, so long awaited—had shown him in no uncertain terms that regret was futile, and wrong, and timidity entirely counterproductive. In short, that he'd been a damned fool.

Ah, how he liked that in a woman!

Well, I did have to read True Heart to figure out the context, and I'm very glad I did. (Sure, this made some sense on its own, but I wanted to know when it was happening and Elizabeth's reasons for going to him then.)
What a lovely pair of fics! It's so good to see Norrington happy for once, but in character. I liked their reactions to each other in both stories, the social background, the appearances, and what lies beneath. (I don't mean the turkey carpet, but I loved that touch too.)

It was so much easier to make Norrie happy before the sequels came out. Not that I don't love the sequels, but after CotBP came out, anything was possible. After the sequels... not so much. Thank you so much for letting me know you enjoyed these!
