Another drabble, for the second prompt at the potc_votes drabble challenge...



~ Frozen Moment ~


"He elected to stay behind, to give us a chance."

Gibbs stared at Elizabeth, dumbstruck, in spite of the fact that this wasn't unexpected. Jack's luck had run out, and he was scared, who wouldn't be? But when it came down to brass tacks, he'd do what he had to.

But... Jack! His captain! His friend...

"Go!"

Josh's moment was lost. Elizabeth's voice was hoarse, grim... ah, the poor lass, much as she loved her Will, she had a terrible soft spot for Jack, her pirate stories made real, though maybe not how she'd once dreamed them.

They shoved off, wordless, away from the beautiful Black Pearl, away from Captain Jack Sparrow, and they began to row.

In spite of the bright, warm Caribbean day, Joshamee Gibbs had never felt so cold.

Such a heartrending moment and you've really captured what must've been going on in Gibbs' head in that scene.

No yarn-spinner as gifted as Gibbs would have honed his craft without a deep understanding of things as they truly are... Really beautifully done.

He's known Elizabeth for a long time, too -- one tends to forget that they were on the same ship for several months when she crossed from England. Not that he seemed too thrilled with her at the time, but I can imagine her nagging him for stories.

It's really hard to get warm when the cold starts on the inside. Poor Gibbs, he knows his folks well--knows Elisabeth's heart in a way, knows Will and Jack. And after that, just loves 'em.

Poor Gibbs doesn't suspect at all. Makes you wonder what the scene was like when he learned in the Locker just HOW Jack had died...Also makes you wonder what his relationship on the way back was with Elizabeth whom he remembered in childhood.

The last line is fantastic, and the title is perfect - this scene, the way you portrayed it is so intense, it really feels like a still, so vivid, and yet motionless, as if the world - for one short moment - just stopped...

Aw, yes, Gibbs is one of the ones that went back for Jack just because he missed him. You can feel the loss. Jack and Gibbs are pretty close and, even though Gibbs clearly has a mind of his own and is pretty competent, there is more than a friend he's lost. He's lost his leader, too, someone he trusted to always know what to do. I think everyone in that longboat felt pretty cold, and the fact he doesn't yet know Elizabeth is responsible is it is doubly chilling. At least in AWE it doesn't look like there are any hard feelings.

No, it doesn't. Pirates, all, I guess. I think Gibbs wasn't all that surprised that Jack "chose" to go down with the Pearl. It was the right thing to do, and Jack's a good Captain, a good man.
