~ In the Garret of the Rusty Goat ~
“OW! Bloody hell, Lizzie, be careful!”
“I am being careful. Stop being such a child. You’ve been through far worse than this any number of times.”
“Not without vast quantities of rum—aaaaa!”
“You drank nearly all we had. Hush! I’m almost finished. And it would help if you’d stop squirming!”
There was a great deal of muffled cursing and bunching of muscles and white-knuckled gripping of bedclothes during the next minute (or perhaps a trifle longer), but finally it was done.
“There!” Elizabeth said, with satisfaction, laying aside the needle. “Just one more thing.” She took up the bottle, set her hand firmly against the small of his back to hold him, and doused what was left of the rum over the many small wounds on Jack’s now less-than-perfect arse.
He shrieked into the pillow like a girl.
She let him go, and he lifted his head and glared at her over his shoulder. “I don’t bloody care what you prefer, next time I’m going to be on top!”
She chuckled and stretched out beside him on the far-too-narrow cot. “Next time, my love, we’ll check for splinters before we let ourselves get carried away on an unfamiliar floor.”
