This one is for [livejournal.com profile] elessil. Now, how did I know what her request would be? ;)

~ Leniency ~

“Sir! You’re letting him have the run of the ship?”

There was obvious disapproval in the tone, and Norrington stiffened slightly. “Mr. Gillette, you are out of order!”

“But…but sir! He’s a…pirate! You said yourself—“

“I know what I said, Mr. Gillette.” His lieutenant began again to protest, but Norrington cut him off. “That will be all, Gillette. Sparrow will be hanged in due course. In the meantime, we will give him such freedom as may be had on a vessel armed to the teeth and fully manned with the King’s finest. You may go.”

Gillette gobbled slightly, but remembered himself at last. He saluted briefly, and took himself off, though he gave Sparrow a searing look as he passed him on deck.

Sparrow, who had been leaning on the rail, watching the sea, and the island, now far behind them, straightened and watched Gillette disappear below-decks, then turned to face Norrington. For a moment, the two looked at each other. Natural enemies. An uneasy, and very temporary truce.

Norrington’s brow quirked, and then he turned away.

As he walked back to the quarterdeck, he thought of Elizabeth. Now his betrothed. He wondered if she had any real understanding of how fortunate she had been in Sparrow. After helping her gain the shore, he had apparently behaved in an almost gentlemanly manner for the duration of their sojourn on that island.

A very odd sort of pirate.

Yes. The irons, and the brig could wait. And the hanging: that could wait too.

They’d all come, soon enough.

Thank you so much. It seems so easy to hear Norrington and Gillette's voices, don't you think? I always have a harder time hearing Jack than anybody else.

So happy you liked it. We all have our favorite subjects, don't we? And I always enjoy writing Norrington (although I'm glad you didn't mind me throwing in Jack, which seems to be inevitable with me).

Thank you so much! I can imagine lots of little scenes from that part of the movie. So interesting to speculate on everyones' thoughts and conversations.

Great! Both Norrington and Gillette are perfect. Pity, in a way, that we never got to see anything from that voyage in the movie, it must have been an interesting one, but then, not knowing leaves more to the imagination :-)

Yes, lots of fodder for fanfiction in that. Glad you liked this one.

Oh very nice! Poor Gillette, he never quite gets it, does he?

I really liked this line: For a moment, the two looked at each other. Natural enemies. An uneasy, and very temporary truce.

and when Norrington acknowledges Elizabeth being very lucky for Jack's gentlemanly-ness. That was a very nice point.

and the ending was great as well. those last 3 lines have a lot of impact

Yes, I do like abusing Gillette. He's such a twit. (Although there are authors who can make me see him in a different light--but it's all for naught the next time I watch the movie.)

Thank you so much for the feedback! I'm glad you liked this one.

Oh yes! Perfect Norrington. They're both gentlemen, really. It just that the gentleman in Jack is harder to see and he takes great pains to hide him.

I do enjoy seeing Gillette sputter. Lovely ficlet. You have Norrington's voice so well that I half expect him to walk out from behind the computer.

You know, Norrington's character was entertaining, but didn't get me in a whirl like our boy Jack. I'm starting to revise that opinion as you are single-handedly making me a fan of the man. Lovely drabble.

Oh, me too!

Glad you thought I hit Norrington right. He's actually much easier for me to hear than Jack.

Thanks for the feedback.

Do you not read Sparrington, then? I got hooked through [livejournal.com profile] firesignwriter -- first her Fortune and Favor, and then her Moonverse, which is pretty much acknowledged to be the best Sparrington there is. She, and some of the other Sparrington authors, made me see Norrington in a totally different light. He does make a great foil for Jack.

Thanks for the feedback--I'm so happy you liked this one.
