A double drabble (200 words) in reply to the current drabble challenge at Black Pearl Sails...

~ Cruel Innocent ~

"Miss! Miss Elizabeth!"

"What is it, Jane?" Elizabeth, sitting before her glass, met the bright eyes of scullery maid, who’d entered the dressing room entirely without ceremony. Estrella frowned.

"It’s Will Turner!” said Jane, thrillingly. “He's in the kitchen, havin' a piece o' cake. He brought the new pot Cook ordered."

"Really?" Elizabeth’s gaze was full of mischief as it flicked to Estrella's in the mirror. "It would only be polite to greet him and see how he goes on. You’re quite finished with my hair?"

Estrella shook her head, pursing her lips. "Now Miss..."

"Father left him in my charge!" Elizabeth insisted. She sounded most serious, though her brown eyes flashed merrily.

“Five years ago!”

“Even so.” Elizabeth rose, a vision of confidence and beauty at seventeen. Estrella saw the little smile the girl tossed her reflection. All too aware of the effect she had on Will Turner, even when she wasn’t dressed for a party. And now… well, Estrella truly pitied the lad.

But later, discreetly watching the dancing, and the longing eyes that followed her charge around the ballroom, she found it in her to pity Captain Norrington a great deal more.

Great little one-shot you have there. I've been meaning to do an Estrella-Elizabeth one myself.

Thanks so much! I did a Christmas story per [livejournal.com profile] __shy__'s request featuring Estrella/Jack, with a little bit of Elizabeth & Will. Estrella's kind of fun to write.

Was snooping in your journal and saw that, besides PotC, you like 'Daria'! *bounces* Mind if I friend you?

Good assessment of Elizabeth and the men in her life; and how unaware of the effect she has she is.
Well-written, as always.
Am also enjoying the perils-of-Pauline storyline for Jack and his heroine.
You keep to all the characters faithfully, and ones you add like the captain, blend so well.

Thanks so much Felaine. I'm glad to know you enjoyed this, and the latest bit of Dark of the Moon, and very happy you feel everyone's in character.

(Oooh, icon!!! I live in hope that you will favor us with another journal entry one of these days!) (Or anything else you care to write... ;) )

Ooh, more Estrella fic! Yay! I like the last line in particular. :-)

discretely

um, is that a typo? 'Discrete' means 'separate', at least in UK usage...

I've just about caught up with Dark of the Moon, all but the latest instalment. Great work, so funny and high-spirited. :-)

It was a typo -- or actually a spelling error. Fixed now. Thanks for the heads up.

Yes, poor Norrie. The last line expresses the heart of the matter: she's quite unaware of Norrington's regard, since she's just coming out of girlhood and realising what she is, and probably still considers him old (as she must have done at twelve when they first met). Glad you enjoyed a little more of Estrella's pov!

And thanks for reading Dark of the Moon, too, and letting me know you like it. There'll more mayhem on the way this weekend. ;)

It's always interesting to see the characters from Estrella's perspective and this is lovely, and a little sad. she found it in her to pity Captain Norrington a great deal more *sigh* But he's older, as you mentioned above, and I imagine Elizabeth finds him rather boring. Poor James, he doesn't stand much of a chance...

I don't think they understand one another in the least at this point, and very little more by the time of the movie. That's why it's fun to write Elizabeth/James when they're older and know and appreciate each other for what they are, not what they imagine each other to be.

I'm glad you thought it lovely. I should have had you edit it -- there was a misspelling (discretely/discreetly) and I made James a lieutenant and he would've been a captain by that time, as [livejournal.com profile] honorat pointed out. Made the corrections here, but it's still wrong at BP Sails, of course. Bah.

Here as promised. I love how all the help know perfectly well what is in the wind with Elizabeth and Will Turner.

What I particularly enjoyed about Estrella's point of view is that she sees Elizabeth as flirting outrageously with Will Turner, but having no serious intentions--she pities him as she wouldn't if he had a chance with her beautiful charge.

Elizabeth has that pretty, popular debutante confidence here, and I love how she twists her father's orders to suit herself. You go girl!

Poor James. If it were the Middle Ages he could take a vow of celibacy and become a monk. Estrella is certainly that class of society who, because they were taken for granted, see a lot more than anyone might think.

Great drabble.

Well, I've heard the help always knows what's going on 'upstairs', and Elizabeth's scandalous predilection for the blacksmith's apprentice can't have gone unremarked.

What I particularly enjoyed about Estrella's point of view is that she sees Elizabeth as flirting outrageously with Will Turner, but having no serious intentions--she pities him as she wouldn't if he had a chance with her beautiful charge.

I doubt if Estrella would consider that Elizabeth could be serious about Will-- as the Gov's daughter, Elizabeth would be expected to marry well. I doubt if Elzabeth herself was really seriously considering it until their adventure with Jack, et al, and she realized just what kind of man Will was and how much he meant to her.

Thanks for commenting so thoughtfully. Always intriguing to consider different aspects of the characters.
