Lily Rose

As most everyone now knows, Johnny Depp's little 7 year old girl, Lily Rose, was hospitalized for the last week or more with a "serious" malady. Various sources now say she's better and out of the hospital. No official word has come out regarding the nature of the illness, although this is being reported in many of the news stories (in this exact wording)...

A source told In Touch magazine: "After the wound was left untreated, blood poisoning developed. It has now spread through her body and has affected her vital organs."

Now I'm wondering two things: 1) How reliable is In Touch magazine in reporting news? From its website, it looks to be a tabloid and a publication I wouldn't trust for accurate information; and 2) Why has this anonymous source worded it in that particular way? It implies negligence on the part of her parents and other caregivers, which was probably not at all the case. Sounds like this source might have had an axe to grind.

Sort of suspicious, I think.

In Touch is like Star and any other tabloids...not reliable at all imo.

My hubby stepped on a nail a year ago, got it treated right away, went to the doctor, and still ended up getting an infection so bad that he had to spend 3 days in the hospital hooked up to an IV filled with drugs to cure it.

So it could be that what made her so sick but no one knows the whats and hows of it.

It makes me furious that they would put such a sly, negative spin on that report. I first read it off a link at [livejournal.com profile] depp_daily and there were three pages of comments, and about half the commenters seemed to assume negligence.

Puncture wounds are notorious tricky. I'm glad your husband has recovered. What a scare that must have been for all of you!

And thus it begins. It sells papers, I guess. (And pisses me off no end.)

I know...no one knows for sure what happened and I am sure that they would never put their children in danger...

like the puncture wound my husband got...we run a Meat Co and the doctors figured raw meat contaminated the nail...so Lily Rose could have had something happened like that and it takes a while to get better!

I was assuming it might be something like meningitis which I had a cousin's young son die from and he was almost 7 years old.

I know -- it could have been anything. No one is immune to tragedy. I'm so relieved to hear she's well enough to go home, whatever it was.

Agreed on all of this.

It pisses me off because Johnny is - from everything I've seen and heard - one of the nicest guys in Hollywood and then he's given this shit.

It's okay. I believe in karma. If someone did have an axe to grind and did this to be vindictive, they'll pay the price eventually.

Stuff happens, this sounds like pure speculation on the magazine's part.

Just the other week my 6 year old got bit by the cat. They put her on antibiotics straight away and we had to keep a close eye on it. Luckily it healed fine but it did make us a bit anxious, especially after all the stuff we went through last October with her heart.

Hubby got bit by a cat as a teen and despite initial treatment had to have surgery to clean out the tendon sheath in his index finger.

Grrr. Magazines like In Touch put the most sensationalist spin on any story they get. They may, for all we know, make up those "source" quotes, since there's no way to verify them.

Exactly. It amazes me that some people seem to take delight in assuming the worst. There are few things worse than seeing your child suffer, but to add malicious insinuations on top of it is unconscionable.

That's what I was thinking when I first read it, and there seems to be no further confirmation from any other source -- all the other sites are quoting that one, so far. Makes me angry. It's all about money, in the end, about selling more magazines or whatever. They don't call it the "root of evil" for nothing.

As a nurse I'm sure you know how difficult puncture wounds can be, and as a mother you certainly know the anguish of watching your child suffer, particularly with what you've been through lately. I'm so glad your little girl is all right, btw. That was a scary time, for a while.

*hugs*

agreed. it's incredibly suspicious.

what bothers me even more, though, are all the negative comments people have been making about "negligent parenting"; comparing johnny and vanessa to britney spears and michael jackson. it's like they just can't wait to dish out blame and make negative comments.

I don't ever read tabloids and I love celebrity gossip. I don't even look at tabloids at the market because they piss me off, so I have no idea what In Touch is like, but I can tell you this, Johnny seems far too in love with his kids to allow anything bad to happen on his watch. Besides, infections (if that's what was wrong) are very tricky. Heck, I spent 3 weeks in hospital hooked up to IV antibiotics and still developed staph.

I think there's a lot of jealousy involved when people jump on a media bandwagon like that, as though they can't feel good about themselves without dragging someone else down. Really sad.

With all we know about how JD adores and dotes on his children, it's appalling that people still put such a negative spin on something like this! Am grumpy this evening - thanks for giving me a target!

That's true, although I bet he's not home as much as he'd like to be, what with the nature of his work.

Infections are very tricky, and unfortunately so many bugs are becoming immune to the various antibiotics that they are increasingly difficult to treat.

Very glad you are recovered now -- that must have been so awful for you.

*hugs you*

It's a good target, a worthy target. The media, and the sheep who follow along without question, is a pet peeve of mine.

Grrrrrr.

Yeah, but you know as well as anyone that if it *were* a legitimate source, say from the hospital, they would probably word it passively like that and say how they couldn't comment because of liability issues. (Then again, short of her death, I can't see the hospital PR flak giving out ANY specific information on a child - for liability reasons and HIPAA.)

The only reason our local hospitals will give out info on children is if the police have given us the names or the family members have talked to us. So, I don't think this is a credible source. Actually, there is no way it is.

But that's the point. It isn't worded passively. If it were passive they wouldn't have said "After the wound was left untreated," which could mean anything from the kid hid it until it was a big problem to parental negligence -- and guess which one the backbiting gossipy media whores are going to choose to assume? No, whoever said that was not trying to be neutral or respect the family's feelings or privacy. The major news sources -- bbc, new york and l.a. times, cnn -- aren't using the quote at all, so it must be a questionable source.

I don't doubt it's not a legitimate source. But "left untreated" is passive - active would be to accuse someone of neglecting it. (It's a fine line, but in court and in print - both of which I've worked in for several years - tense can make a difference. It's stupid, but it's used.)

That's true. It would hold up as passive in court. Smart (and evil) source, whoever it is.

There's always that possibility, but then there's lots more dragging of names through the mud before it's all over. If it were only himself maybe, but he's pretty protective of his kids' privacy.
