Drabble: 'From the Ashes'
150 words for the current drabble challenge at
blackpearlsails...
~ From the Ashes ~
"Hold on!" he commands, and for a wonder she minds him, her face a mask of tragedy. She jars him, body and soul, but he ignores this, and a single shot – trust him not to miss that one! – tears them aloft, the ragged sail caught by the storm. It takes everything he's got, his arms and shoulders burn with the strain, though somehow he's aware that Hector's beastie's grabbed onto a dangling rope, and that Lizzie, clinging for dear life, is nonetheless looking down, transfixed with horror and despair.
Then the Dutchman's gone, along with her girl's dream of love, and she lays her head in defeat.
He's pretty overcome himself, this hasn't gone according to plan at all, and though he bends his head briefly to hers, he can't summon his voice enough to repeat his command, though it echoes, resilient, through his mind...
Hold on!

I don't see how it could be interpreted that way. It's quite obvious that E.'s mind is on her loss, as is J.'s.
Anyway, I'm very happy you enjoyed my version. Thank you for letting me know!

There seemed to be devastation all around them in several levels, at that moment. Even survival seemed to be a bitter pill. And the word "winning" just didn't seem to fit the equation at all, for any one.
Good drabble!

The drama of that scene is pretty much unsurpassed, I must agree.

It's the inverse of the end of DMC -- when she leaves him to die on the Pearl. He lifts her away from death... and Death. Poignant and symbolic.
