150 words for the current drabble challenge at [livejournal.com profile] blackpearlsails...

~ From the Ashes ~

"Hold on!" he commands, and for a wonder she minds him, her face a mask of tragedy. She jars him, body and soul, but he ignores this, and a single shot – trust him not to miss that one! – tears them aloft, the ragged sail caught by the storm. It takes everything he's got, his arms and shoulders burn with the strain, though somehow he's aware that Hector's beastie's grabbed onto a dangling rope, and that Lizzie, clinging for dear life, is nonetheless looking down, transfixed with horror and despair.

Then the Dutchman's gone, along with her girl's dream of love, and she lays her head in defeat.

He's pretty overcome himself, this hasn't gone according to plan at all, and though he bends his head briefly to hers, he can't summon his voice enough to repeat his command, though it echoes, resilient, through his mind...

Hold on!

That is a very intense scene. It sure didn't go according to anyones plan... (Maybe Jones's plan? Who knows?)

A heartrending moment for certain, and you've captured it beautifully.

Not according to plan, indeed.

Thank you so much!

So sorry it took me so long to approve your [livejournal.com profile] blackpearlsails membership -- I can't access LJ at work any more, and we went out to dinner after that. Fixed now though!

Wow, powerful! This was, IMHO (and completely without any shippish second thoughts), one of the most enjoyable AWE moments. A little bit of heroic!Jack doesn't hurt, every now and then ;) Very dramatic, and you captured the feeling of it perfectly.

Heroic!Jack is a wonderful thing. And that scene was only shippy in the vaguest sense -- they are both devastated by their losses. I'm so glad you enjoyed this! Thank you for letting me know.

I loved this moment in AWE. I love his understanding of what needs to happen and his desire to get her off the ship, pulling her to him and carrying them both aloft. And their faces - oh, the anguish. You've captured the moment beautifully.

Finally - a piece that addresses the anguish they were feeling in that moment, instead of how in love they are clutching each other. (Oh, if I had a nickel for every ... LOL) Well told.

*boggles*

I don't see how it could be interpreted that way. It's quite obvious that E.'s mind is on her loss, as is J.'s.

Anyway, I'm very happy you enjoyed my version. Thank you for letting me know!

On the road, but taking the time to at least say "Well done!"

There seemed to be devastation all around them in several levels, at that moment. Even survival seemed to be a bitter pill. And the word "winning" just didn't seem to fit the equation at all, for any one.

Good drabble!

One of my favorite moments in AWE for its emotion, which you have conveyed so simply beautifully here.

It's the inverse of the end of DMC -- when she leaves him to die on the Pearl. He lifts her away from death... and Death. Poignant and symbolic.

Thank you! I think you're right, this scene is the inverse of DMC's climactic scene, and both of them are amazing in so many ways.

This was my favorite moment in AWE, but you hardly ever see anything written about it. I'm so glad you took it on :D I love the vunerability in Jack in this. It had never once occured to me that it would be physically as well as emotionally draining for our hero to hold onto that parachute.

Well done as always :)
