Stories from Other Fandoms
En Dishabille - Written for Yuletide 2007, Fandom: Georgette Heyer - The Grand Sophy, Pairing: Charles/Sophy
Eight rules for writing fiction by Kurt Vonnegut
These seem very true, even to a novice like me...
1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
4. Every sentence must do one of two things -- reveal character or advance the action.
5. Start as close to the end as possible.
6. Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them -- in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.
-- Vonnegut, Kurt Vonnegut, Bagombo Snuff Box: Uncollected Short Fiction (New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999), 9-10.

Date: 2008-09-09 04:35 am (UTC)I'm so glad I decided to do some of that yesterday -- there's a lot of stuff to archive, but it's kind of nice to have them in some kind of chronological order, by plotline, rather than all mixed up, like they are on FF.net. I hope you enjoy the stories!

I just wanted to let you know your link for the story "Bath Holiday" doesn't work. And thanks for providing the brief periods of entertainment I allow myself in between franticly trying to meet deadlines.

Date: 2012-03-25 07:37 pm (UTC)As I said to Florencia, please blame my inattention on unfamiliarity with PCs in general and navigating my own journal pages.
I've been a bit adrift this last half year plus, wandering on the Internet and finding some happy surprises in fandoms I'd not even known existed online and getting frankly discouraged that there was such little movement in PotC fandom even after On Stranger Tides. Mostly, my lack of focus has been because of RL and the fallout from events back in June of last year are still being worked through but there may be some daylight ahead that's not an oncoming train and I have hopes of being a better friend and more attentive reader within this year.

Date: 2012-03-26 12:59 am (UTC)Happy fandom surprises are always a good thing. I've been reading a little Big Bang Theory lately, myself, and some Pride and Prejudice, too. But mainly I've been going back to old PotC stories, when I want to read fic, the stuff that came out when the fandom was shiny and new, and replete with excellent writers. And wank free, for the most part, which was a lovely thing.
It seems that OST just didn't inspire any of us to write much, not because it wasn't entertaining, but because the relationships weren't drawn in a way that made one long for more. When I think of writing, it's Jack/Elizabeth, or Jack/Harry, going back instead of forward. But the drive to write hasn't been there for a while, sad to say. I'm out of the habit of writing and even drabbles seem to be a struggle. I am thinking of finishing that one WIP I have left, Devil's Own Luck, but whether I will actually do it remains to be seen (thoiugh I did finally finish Bath Holiday, which had been languishing just as long, so you never know).
It's I who owes an apology to the PotC fandom, having pretty much abandoned ship since Christmas. RL and other interests have drawn me away, and (as you may have noticed) I haven't even been posting drabble challenges. I may see if I can do something about that.
I hope RL is good to you this year. Massive hugs, and thanks for your friendship, fannish and otherwise. I wish it wasn't such a long commute to NC!

RE: Awesome List,
Date: 2015-01-08 05:33 am (UTC)I wrote a lot of Jack/OFC before I started indulging in my favorite pairing. I was all for J/E from my first viewing of CofBP, but didn't want to deviate from canon until I saw so many other great writers doing so and couldn't resist joining in. Many of those writers are on your friends list, and I hope you don't mind that I've friended you back. Hoping to see more of your J/E Photoshop work, and perhaps some of your writing?
Thank you again!
