~ A La Mode ~
"So what did he give you?"
Elizabeth started and turned to find Jack emerging from a shadow. He looked down his nose at her and Elizabeth lifted her chin. "Were you watching us?" she demanded.
"Maybe." He nodded at Capitaine Chevalle's gift. "Not so Penniless after all, eh? Bloody encroaching fop."
"You're jealous!"
"Am not! But I must say, it's the outside of enough, you accepting gifts of the old lecher. Jewelry?"
"Patches." Elizabeth displayed the ornate little box on the palm of her hand, eyes laughing.
"Patches!" Jack made a face as he picked it up. "Outdated, and an insult. You ain't pox-marked."
"No, thank God. I'm afraid I may have said something that made him think I admired that star-shaped one he wore at Christmas."
"Silly arse."
"I beg your pardon?"
"Him, not you." Jack opened the box. "Though this one's singularly appropriate." He delicately selected a small black heart and, eyes glinting, considered her pout. "Placed so—" He set the patch, just beside her lips. "—it's called The Kissing." And he did.
The pout vanished, and one brow rose. "How did you acquire that piece of information?"
"Captain Jack Sparrow, love. How should I not?"

I do love jealous!Jack, and how he'd try to deny it.

That surprises me! I've always been fascinated by that quirk of fashion.
Jack jealous? How could that be? lol!
So happy you enjoyed!

Like Artaxastra said! These little bits are such a nice fresh, flirty little breeze amid all the angst.
Never so tasty as when you are carefully applying some of that deliberately anachronistic Regency flavor (all in a good cause. You do that period near "voice" perfect.

Yes, was watching Pride and Prejudice again last night, and have been listening to the Aubrey/Maturin books on tape for weeks -- how I love them!!!
Glad you enjoyed!

That bit is just perfect.
Piratey fluff and Georgian doodads make for a very lovely morning.

*sighs dreamily*
Considering the subject matter originates from something so unpleasant, I'm amazed that anyone could make it sound romantic, but you've achieved that wonderfully here! I didn't actually realise they had names! How fab!
Lovely drabble :)

I'm very surprised you didn't know, actually. They started out as a cover-up for smallpox scars, but then became fashionable across the board. I'm sure Chevalle's "mole" (so described in Wikipedia) is supposed to be one.
Glad you enjoyed this!

It's surprising to me that several people said this -- I guess I just read the right kind of historic novels or something. Hard to find much information about it, though. I think they were fashionable up until the latter part of the 1700's, actually, so really I was stretching a point with Jack saying they were no longer in the mode.
So happy you enjoyed it! Jealous Jack is a lot of fun. *g*
