Drabble: 'Terrifying'

One more drabble, this time for the 'Threat' prompt, with thanks again to hereswith for the late night beta.



~ Terrifying ~

“…I meant you being threatened by that pirate. Sounds terrifying!”

Norrington’s ill-timed proposal instantly flies from Elizabeth’s head and she’s back on the dock, the thick chain around her neck pulling her hard against Jack Sparrow’s wiry frame, his breath and oddly musical voice hot in her ear: “Elizabeth – it is Elizabeth, isn’t it?”

“It’s Miss Swann.”

Her whole being had trembled, yes, but with fury, foremost, and an oddly detached fascination beneath it. The insolence! The audacity!

The stupidity! She knew her father would have seen reason…

And then, with a rough jerk, she was facing him, his pistol at her temple, his eyes warm, with a flash of summer lightning.

To be drawn to such a man, and in such circumstances…

“Oh, yes,” she says to Estrella, mechanically. “Terrifying.”

I've always loved that brief scene, and the look on Elizabeth's face when she's remembering that encounter is priceless. Beautiful rendering of her thoughts, and Jack's eyes with their "flash of summer lightning."

I always thought Elizabeth's thoughts were in the right direction. Marriage at that age WOULD be scary; marriage at my age is scary, LOL. (Plus, Jack is hard to ignore or fear.) Thanks for posting!

From what one reads, she would have been groomed for marriage to "a fine man" from an early age. Maybe it was the lack of a mother's guidance, coupled with her father's indulgence, that allowed her to think outside the box there.

I always found her reponse to Estrella a bit sarcastic, as if in her mind she rolled her eyes as she was saying it. Lol. It's great how we see things in different ways, makes for lots of different fic on the same scenes, yes?
