Birthday Drabble: 'Just Dessert'

A Happy Birthday drabble, 225 words of post-AWE wishful thinking for aravah's birthday prompt...




~ Just Dessert ~

"Come on, lad," said Teague. "I'll take you up to bed."

Jamie roused from where he'd been nodding off, reluctant to leave the celebration but unable to stay awake any longer. His own bed—that was a comfortable thought after all these weeks at sea, and particularly after the last two days, days that had changed their lives so much. He slid from his chair and followed Teague, the two of them slipping away without ceremony. But then, at the landing halfway up the stairs, Jamie paused to look down at the happy, vociferous group below.

Jamie had met his father several memorable times over the last nine years, of course, and he had heard a great deal about him from others. Awe of the immortal had always been accompanied by pride in the man. But to see his father here, alive and whole and released from Calypso's service, and, along with mother and Uncle Jack, telling the tale of it all to the people of Shipwreck Cove, was more overwhelming, more joyful a thing than he could well fathom, even if he hadn't been ready to drop.

Then a kindly hand was laid upon his shoulder. "It's like havin' your cake and eatin' it too, ain't it lad?"

Jamie grinned, and looked up at Captain Teague's lined, unwontedly lighthearted face. "That's it! That's it, exactly!"

Such sweetness, to see this wonderous thing from a child's eyes--I love the idea that somehow or the other, Will's come home to his family and it's cool how you explained their relationship--the pride the boy felt and the joy that his Da was home. Elisabeth's child would have a blessed life in the wealth of adults available to him. And Will's back!! What glorious joy!

Having grown up with my mama telling stories in her own unique way, the behind end first seems entirely just right.

Thank you beyond any simple words I might write for considering how to get past the utterly DUMB (Dastardly, Uber-Mean, Bad)end to AWE. I was so frustrated when I saw that, I went to my car and tried to figure out how to run over myownself--YUCK! I was a little less offended when I saw the little bit past credits, thinking okay he serves 10 years, not my best choice, but hell, I'm a sucker for love, so...then the DVD comes out and some igits say no, it's forever that he gets to be the Ferryman! What!?

So if anyone can heal this booboo I do believe you'd tap it. Sort of, I've read other variations on this theme, some just don't sit nicely, some are flat wrong. I'm ever the hopeful romantic--and the happy endings dictionary definitely has my picture. Thanks for something to look forward to. Anticipation is such a delightful and addicting rush.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that! 'Tis actually rather likely that hanging around Uncle Jack would accelerate the whelp's acquisition of a polysyllabic vocabulary.

Come to think of it, I wonder where Jack picked it up?

Good question. We don't know much about Teague, of course, and almost nothing about Jack's mother. I guess there are as many backstories as there are writers. :)

I love this!! Will freed, a warm reunion and celebration, a good relationship among Will, Elizabeth and Jack, Teague being a kind and very wise "grandfather" figure...Jamie so full of joy, he can scarcely contain it in his small body and a deft description that is a perfect match for such a moment.

We don't get much of this, it's true -- no angst or division between favorite characters -- Will gets to rejoin his family, and Jamie has been raised to know and love Jack and Teague, as well. Simply perfect :)
