Very good post! I really despise super-obvious Mary Sues... :( Those tend to draw a very finite line defining the author's sexual fantasies, and place my poor traumatized persona on the exceedingly wrong side of said border. Just because I like someone doesn't mean I need to know exactly which one of the care bears they'd have sex with.
Oh MAN have I read some bad Mary-Sue fanfic. I'm having war flashbacks! ARRRGH!
Sorry about the flashbacks. Scenes from badfic tend to linger, don't they? That's where my imtolerance saves me, somewhat--if a character is implausible, or the canon characters are OOC, or if the writing isn't up to my expectations, I usually abandon a story pretty quickly. I'm not much of a mentor for developing writers: no patience.
