"Words" Drabble

Been doing the usual since I posted last. Working (still no new computer), shopping, cooking. Went to Disneyland Friday with ladymora, shockwavesix, chainedbunny, amy_leone, radiumx, and Chris, and a good time was had by all, though it was a really long day and I pretty much just slacked yesterday. Wrote some. Finishing up Chapter 4 of  harry_iv. And did a drabble for this week's drabble challenge at Black Pearl Sails: Words. Way over a hundred words--almost a triple drabble.

* The Magic Words *

 

“Pass me another bottle, will you please, love?”

“It’s ‘Miss Swann’,” she said for perhaps the third time in an hour.

“Oh, right. Sorry. Thank you very much, Miss Swann.” He smirked at her, uncorked the bottle, and took a long swig. Then, noticing her eyes boring into him, he winced, burped slightly, and said, “What? Have I grown a third eye?”

She rolled hers. “No! It’s just…how did you acquire your manners? Sometimes you sound like…a gentleman!”

“I am a gentleman,” he said, looking down his nose at her, eyelids drooping.

“You’re a pirate!”

He nodded. “That, too.” He took another sip, frowned at her. “What? You think I can’t be both?”

She seemed disconcerted. “I…” She broke off. Thought of her storybook pirates. Her brows twitched together. “Who are you?”

“Captain Jack Sparrow,” he said promptly.

She sighed, elaborately, exasperated. “No! I mean…you haven’t answered my question!”

“I did!”

“You didn’t! How did you acquire the manners of a gentleman?”

He gave a chuff of laughter, shook his head, took another sip, and finally said,  “Look, I’d have to be a great fool not to smooth me path with something that costs so little, wouldn’t I, Miss Swann?”

She stared. A strange look came over her face. Disappointment? “Oh,” she said. She got to her feet. “I’m going for a walk.”

He raised the bottle in a farewell salute, and watched her walk down the beach. Then he turned back to the sea. “Mum would’ve had me hide if I hadn’t, wouldn’t she now?” he murmured. A crooked smile touched his lips, and he lifted the bottle once more. “Cheers, love.”

I’d have to be a great fool not to smooth me path with something that costs so little... Miss Swann, indeed. She's amazed by his intelligence and offended by how natural he is. Oh, yes, and she's fascinated, too! Maybe Jack needs to introduce Elizabeth to her more "natural" side.

You know, this would be a great starting point to give us some tidbits of Jack's history... reminiscences... (realized this after commenting at BPS). Please, please, I'd like to hear more about Jack and his mother.

We all have our different versions of Sparrow History, don't we. Might be fun to write, at that--or maybe you should give it a shot!

I'm writing the fourth Harry & the Pirate story, and it will refer back to various incidents in all the characters' past lives--who knows, maybe I'll be able to work something in about Jack's mother.

Young Jack is quite hidden in the fog - I can barely make him out. Maybe one of these days he'll tell me about his mum, but I'm really hoping you elaborate on his comment in your drabble. I do enjoy character history and am interested in/curious about the lot of them as children, both to read and to write. Just imagine young Norrington....

Hopefully RL will ease up a bit so I can start reading Harry IV soon, but there's a baby quilt to finish quickly (pretty sure the child is due next week) and I haven't even finished all the blocks yet.

Oooh, quilting! I greatly admire crafty people (and especially appreciate the work and beauty of quilts as many people here at school and throughout the district are quilters), but don't do anything in that direction myself. I am sadly lazy, and addicted to the computer--writing and graphic design, which I do in my job.

Looking forward to being friended. Also, perhaps you'd like to take a peek and consider joining prettygoodfood, an LJ community I set up to post our family cookbook. I haven't posted much for a while, but plan on eventually having the whole cookbook online (we made it as a family gift when the kids were little), and several wonderful cooks around LJ have joined and posted some of their favorites too.

Must work now: have been carving turkeys for the big staff luncheon for the last hour and am ready to sit down to some quiet desk work.
