Drabble: 'Remembering' (J/E - PG13)

Started out well with
mininanowrimo (I've only committed to 100 words a day) but then missed yesterday as I was gone all day and too tired when I got home -- fell asleep sitting up in bed with the computer open and ready and woke at 12:30 a.m. Oh, well. But here are the 500 words I wrote on Nov. 1 & 2 for the current prompt at
blackpearlsails...
~ Remembering ~
“Do you remember when you first knew you loved me?”
Jack glanced up at Elizabeth, but did not take the fatuous smile from his lips, nor cease the dandling of his infant daughter, indisputable proof of Elizabeth’s regard for his own good self. Or bad self, perhaps. He chuckled. “ ‘course I do.”
After a moment she crouched beside them. “Well?”
“Well what?” And to Isabelle, purred, “Who’s me darlin’ girl, eh? Sweet, little love—“
“Jack!”
He sighed. “On the dock, then, when you berated your da and Norrington so finely on my behalf.”
“Really?”
He glanced at her again. Still the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen (though that wasn’t it). “Or maybe it was the first time I saw you, drifting about on the sea floor. Admirably silent you were then, as I remember.”
She narrowed her eyes. “I was unconscious.”
“Aye, that’s what it takes,” he said, and then “Ow!” when she pinched his leg. “Stop that, I might drop her.”
“You’d drop yourself first,” Elizabeth said, and her eyes were suddenly soft.
“I would, too,” Jack agreed. He drew Isabelle close to nestle against him, but his eyes were on Elizabeth’s face now. “So when did you know?”
She smiled wryly. “I didn’t, for a long time. Later I realized it was the same as it was for you. That first meeting on the dock. But I didn’t know it until… until I’d lost you.”
He arched a brow. It would always rankle. The Kiss. The Kraken.
Only one thing to be done.
Isabelle was mostly asleep. He stood and went to her cradle – the same Jamie had lain in not so many years ago – and tucked her in. She blinked once… twice… then the dark lashes fanned against those perfect cheeks and she was gone to the Land of Dreams.
He turned to Elizabeth, no dream, all too real, standing now and edged with the light of the fire. He stalked toward her and though she lifted her chin, her eyes were still clouded with distant pain.
He took her and kissed her, rather roughly, his hands moving over her back and down her backside, over that delightfully curved flesh, making her gasp and stiffen.
He was stiffening himself, actually.
“Off with ‘em,” he growled against her lips and swiftly and expertly began to unbutton the breeches.
“Jack!”
“Now.”
She gave a shaky laugh, and her arms tightened around him.
*
She wasn’t laughing presently, and it was good that Isabelle was a sound sleeper.
*
Much later he lay staring up at the dim ceiling, one disheveled and exhausted Pirate King curled against him, clinging to him even in sleep.
The fire was going out. He should get up and tend to it… but no. Too tired, the both of them.
He thought, as he drifted off, that it was a good partnership. They took turns being strong, much of the time.
Two halves of something whole.
