Shut up and dance with me...
Apr. 12th, 2016 09:22 pmSo it's been a long time. A looooong time. But I just started writing again, after a two and a half year dry spell. Fell out of love and into like with PotC (don't hate me), and it wasn't until late last year that I was... not tempted, but sort of enraptured again by fannish squee thanks to BBC's Sherlock.
It's taken me months to start writing anything in it -- not as easy as PotC was, by any means. But I am finally hearing the characters' voices in my head and have been writing like mad for the last month or so (almost all Sherlock/Molly Hooper, which was hard to wrap my mind around at first, but I've worked the details out via other writers' fic and my own thoughts on the matter).
I've been posting on AO3, and then added FF.net, but I miss LJ, it was always such a great format for fanfic. I have no idea if any of my LJ friends are still out there, but I thought I'd post my Sherlock fic here, too, just for the fun of it and for archive purposes. You are welcome to take a peek if you are so inclined.
And if you haven't watched Sherlock, do it! I know: it's been around since 2010, but I didn't discover it until recently and I'm almost glad I waited as there were nine 90 minute episodes for me to watch, and then the fun of the new special episode at the holidays. I don't watch much other TV now (except for Big Bang Theory, and some Simpsons), but I have in the past and Sherlock is far and away the best produced show I've ever watched.
But more on that in future posts. Right now, I need to save this video because it is my favorite, bar none (though I also love the Where's Matt videos, and may archive them here on LJ, too.
Hey, I'm paying to be here. Might as well use it.

Date: 2016-04-13 06:54 am (UTC)How coincidental: I just posted the 2008 "Where's Matt" vid yesterday, at another comm. It's one of my go-to vids when I want to smile, or I want someone else to. That is a cute vid you posted! I did a double-take at the tiny little snip from Reservoir Dogs, hee hee. Well done!
Sherlock never grabbed me (don't hate me!) (I know it's an excellent show; everyone tells me so and I have no doubt) but it's awesome you're writing again. As for LJ - I've looked around the other places, but nothing even comes close, for fic or community, or really anything. It's so good to see you here again!
How's life??

Date: 2016-04-13 01:44 pm (UTC)We all have our own fannish preferences, don't we? It's weirdly like falling in love: it's either there or it's not. I wasn't really looking for another fandom, but the Sherlock icon had been coming up on my Netflix menu for months (if not years) and I finally decided to give it a try since I'd enjoyed Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in various movies. They were, predictably, amazing in Sherlock, but so was the rest of the cast, and the writing, the whole production... it just blows me away. I am all a-squee at such cleverness.
And to be inspired to write again is no less than thrilling. I truly thought that was a thing of the past for me, but it's back and I've been enjoying it soooo much this last month!
So I'll be seeing you around here. I was checking out Dreamweaver last night, too, and there seems to be a few of the old piratey folk around there, but I'm just not as fond of the Dreamweaver format, close to LJ's as it is. But we'll see, maybe I'll figure it out. For sure I need to purge my LJ feeds, there is an awful lot of extraneous stuff I never read.
Must zoom to work. So good hearing from you!

Date: 2016-04-14 01:31 am (UTC)I have the greatest love for Season 3 of Sherlock, but I didn't have to wait three or four years to see it. I think that long wait between chunks of canon can really ruin it for fans who get invested in their own version of the story -- it happened to me and to a lot of folks in the PotC fandom when DMC and then AWE came out, as you know. Most of the stuff I'm writing in Sherlock is set post Season 3 and will doubtless be rendered very A/U by Season 4, which they have just begun to film. 4 won't come out until next January, so there's a lot of time to get invested. But with the consistently brilliant quality of the production they've maintained throughout the series I expect I'll just be bouncing with fannish squee to see more of the show.
If you can point me to these awesome writers you speak of I would appreciate it, and I'll have to check out your
Sherlock fic -- available on your LJ I hope!.

Date: 2016-04-17 10:13 pm (UTC)I liked this an awful lot. It's a gen fic, but wonderful: http://paisley-pie.livejournal.com/3387.html. Anything by wordstrings is brilliant beyond belief. paperclipbitch did a couple that are on A03 that I liked mucho. She's a wonderful writer. I especially liked her Skyfall stuff (god, so frigging amazing), but her Sherlock stories (I think two of them), are great, too.

You know, I do too. I saw that a lot of the AO3 writers have accounts there, and there is apparently some activity there, challenges and such, but it seems so unorganized to me. Thank you for the fandom info, though. Generally speaking I've only been on Facebook for a couple of years (and I never really post much there), and when I started posting my Sherlock stuff a month ago on AO3 I noticed there had been some changes. The lack of comments is a bit sad, but whatever. My philosophy has always been to write what I want to read, to the best of my ability, and if other folks read and enjoy, that's just icing on the cake. You can't please all the people all the time.
Off to post some more fic here on LJ now. I need to play catch up with that.

Date: 2016-04-14 01:45 am (UTC)I still love the LJ format, and it's so familiar. Since I wasn't writing I got out of the habit of posting here and have mostly been perusing Facebook. But Facebook is so freaking random. I can never find anything I want to keep. Here on LJ that's easy -- hence posting the video above.
Anyway, lovely to hear from you! I'll be around.

Date: 2016-04-17 06:38 pm (UTC)I'm also not really active in the PotC fandom anymore - for me it didn't work anymore after the fourth movie; I felt like many of my favourite writers just didn't know what to do with that new canon and wandered off to greener pastures. And I also didn't get invested in the newer fanfic in any way, and then "Sherlock" happened and I had a new fandom, too. *g*
Awesome that you're getting back in the groove with writing! The Sherlock fandom is a bit, uhm, difficult at times, and the huge gaps between new canon are definitely a problem - I also thought that there were much better solutions to TRF then later presented in the show and I was also a bit miffed about the writers shrugging off that big emotional ending of S2. *sigh* But at least I still enjoyed S3 and the Special very much.
And a big YAY for that video! Nice to see it's back up on youtube with the right song! Such an uplifting, fun clip!

Date: 2016-04-18 03:42 am (UTC)So good to hear from you, and I'm thrilled to know you're a Sherlock fan, too! I was sort of lucky to have consumed so much of the canon in a very short period of time last fall, so I didn't have the problem with the huge gaps. Almost everything I've written is post Season 3, though, so it'll all be rendered A/U next January. Still, I have great faith in the people who produce the show. I'm sure they'll come up with a fabulous 4th season, and they also have season 5 planned, apparently. I am afraid they may kill off Mary at some point, though, as it's a canon element of the original stories, and I will not be happy, to say the least, if that happens.
Glad you enjoyed the video! It just makes me so happy.

Date: 2016-05-02 07:02 pm (UTC)It's definitely an advantage coming rather late to a fandom and not having to wait for new canon aaaall the time. *g* It was the same for me with season 2, since I became aware of season 1 about two months or so before S2. That time was easily bridged with all the fanfic. *g* But then, OMG, the wait between S2 + S3, and it was really a problem because expectations were so high and fandom had come up with sooo many awesome theories and emotional investment etc.
Still, I'm very much looking forward to S4. I'm also thinking that they'll kill off Mary in the near future and I'm just neutral on that point. I find her an intriguing character, but I don't care much for the whole baby thing, and some stuff in S3 felt rather unresolved, although I hope they'll do something about that in S4. But I don't get the extreme Mary hate that seems to be going on in a big part of the fandom. *sigh*
I'm also really worried for Mycroft; I've got a feeling that he might also be a goner at S5 at the latest. :(
