My dear? I've seen the LJ team making noises about this meme eating the bandwidth on the icon servers.

If you put it behind a cut, it will make a significant difference, since it won't have to load the images, every single time any of your friends refresh their friendspage. As a bonus, it will speed things up significantly for those on dial-up.
