Interesting list. I've read a bunch of these. Many in High School as required reading.

re #35 - Not only was I forced to read Le Rouge et le Noir, I was forced to read it in French! Count yourself lucky

In French?? It was definitely bad enough in English.

I think it's better in French. Most books are best read in their original languages.

Oh, I agree. Any translation probably loses some of the nuance of the original.

Considering my age, I've read a scary amount of these.

That's great!

I seem to have read parts of quite a few, which certainly reflects poorly on my reading habits. I'm just a fickle creature.

Given my reputation as a complete bookworm, I've read hardly anything :-p Have to keep an eye open for that Robert Heinlein one though, as I tend to whole-heartedly love all his stuff (and in some ways I'm fairly surprised there isn't more than one of his books on the list - probably due to it getting classed as sci-fi & therefore ignored by self-important people)

I haven't read much Heinlein, but my daughter, [livejournal.com profile] ladymora, loves his stuff.

It would be interesting to know why and by whom these books were banned.

Aye, it would indeed... unfortunately, no one seems to know where the original list comes from - I've seen it several times now, in different groups of friends & that *shrug* Guess we may never know, eh?

Yes, I find that one very weird, too. I can't remember anything controversial in any of the books in that series.
