Wow. [livejournal.com profile] oiseaurobyn pointed out to me that someone really has a lot of time on their hands went to a lot of trouble to make this webpage about the Lovely Jack Doll.

And, to wind up another glorious Talk Like A Pirate Day, here's our favorite sea shanty...

The Drummer and the Cookie

Oh there was a little drummer
And he loved a wall-eyed cook
And he loved her, oh he loved her
Though she had a cock-eyed look,

chorus: With her one eye in the pot
And the other up the chimney
With a bow-wow-wow
Fal-lal the dow-a-diddy
Bow-wow-wow.

When this couple went a-courtin'
For to walk along the shore,
Sez the drummer to the cookie,
"You're the gal that I adore."

(Chorus)

When this couple went a-courtin'
For to walk along the pier,
Sez the cookie to the drummer,
"An' I love you too my dear. "

(Chorus)

Sez the drummer to the cookie,
"'Ain't the weather fine today?"
Sez the cookie to the drummer,
"Is that all ye got to say?"

(Chorus)

Sez the drummer to the cookie
"Shall I buy the weddin' ring? "
Sez the cookie, "Now you're talkin'.
That would be the very thing."

(Chorus)

Sez the drummer to the cookie,
"Will ye name the weddin' day?"
Sez the cookie "We'll be married
In the merry month of May."

(Chorus)

When they went to church to say
"I will" the drummer got a nark,
For her one eye gliffed the Parson,
And the other killed the clerk.

chorus: With her one eye in the pot
And the other up the chimney
With a bow-wow-wow
Fal-lal the dow-a-diddy
Bow-wow-wow.

~.~

nark: a disagreeble surprise caused by a person, and not by a circumstance.
gliff: frighten

Weird, but oddly entertaining.

That's a great (if slightly strange) website! I especially loved the cameos by the pet chipmunk...

I know! At first glance I thought it just silly, but then it goes on and on and on, and I changed 'just silly' to strangely artistic and obsessive. The chipmunk's appearances are definitely a plus: cute and yet surreal.

ROTFL! Do you know the tune? I rather fancy singing that one!

Oh, the tune is great! We have the song on this old recording by the Robert Shaw Chorale. It's a great CD. Other favorites on it are "A-Roving", "Swansea Town", and, yes, "Spanish Ladies"! *G* Take a listen!

How I wish I wasn't a computer dunce! I couldn't get either of the links to work - so I've ordered the CD instead :) Thanks for the recommendation!

I've been listening to that recording since I was about 16 -- a LONG time ago! My kids grew up listening to it too, and [livejournal.com profile] ladymora has it on her Mp3 playlist at her home. We have purchased several different versions over the years -- vinyl disc, cassette, and now CD. It's a favorite. I think you'll enjoy it!

Hee! Great song - had me laughing before I've even had my coffee. And thanks to the heads-up on the Jackdoll site updates - had been meaning to go take a look for the last week or two, but hadn't gotten to it yet.

Somehow I hadn't seen the Jackdoll site before. Clearly I was missing out!

That is a great song -- I've been listening to it on this recording by the Robert Shaw Chorale since I was a kid. Now my kids love it, too.

I gotta ask, what is with the facial hair on the one female doll? Anyone know?

Good eye! Somehow I didn't really notice that, myself. Perhaps it just adds to the air of surrealism.

or maybe making fun of Johnny Depps girlfriend?

I think s/he's supposed to be Johnny's character Bon Bon from Before Night Falls.

That's the best I could come up with.
