In the fifth pic down- you can see it in others, but that's the best- he's wearing some kind of leather pad on his right palm. Possibly also on his left, but I can't quite tell. What is that? To improve his grip on his sword, maybe? Or to protect his hands from the ropes while climbing the rigging? Is this a stupid question that I'll kick myself for when I get the answer? (Probably, but I still want to know!)
It's the same thing he was wearing in the first film. Remember when he pinches one of the Aztec coins and slips it beneath the leather? And you can plainly see it in the gaol when he's talking to Will. The best way I've heard it described is a "sailor's palm", and it is indeed for protecting one's hands from the ropes. Those puppies can HURT you!
GeekMama, was that a sideways request for me to open my big mouth again? LOL!!!
Actually, it's a "sailmaker's palm"-- sort of a giant leather thimble. Sailmakers used them to protect their hands from the huge needles they used to repair sails with.

Yes, actually, although I would have put it more along the lines of "I hope ladywarringford deigns to share a bit more of her considerable knowledge of all things Sparrowish."
