In the fifth pic down- you can see it in others, but that's the best- he's wearing some kind of leather pad on his right palm. Possibly also on his left, but I can't quite tell. What is that? To improve his grip on his sword, maybe? Or to protect his hands from the ropes while climbing the rigging? Is this a stupid question that I'll kick myself for when I get the answer? (Probably, but I still want to know!)

Oooh! Icon! Good picture of you.

To tell you the truth, I don't know what that is. Perhaps someone else will be able to enlighten us.

It's the same thing he was wearing in the first film. Remember when he pinches one of the Aztec coins and slips it beneath the leather? And you can plainly see it in the gaol when he's talking to Will. The best way I've heard it described is a "sailor's palm", and it is indeed for protecting one's hands from the ropes. Those puppies can HURT you!

GeekMama, was that a sideways request for me to open my big mouth again? LOL!!!

Actually, it's a "sailmaker's palm"-- sort of a giant leather thimble. Sailmakers used them to protect their hands from the huge needles they used to repair sails with.

Thanks! I was hoping there would be a costumer or two out there that could answer that one.

Actually, I didn't learn that from being a costumer, I learned it from being an Age of Sail geek. *g*

I cheefully stand corrected! And if there's any more Age of Sail geekiness you'd care to share, I'll be MORE than happy to soak it up!

Remember -- don't just embrace your inner geek. FLAUNT it!

LOL

Yes, actually, although I would have put it more along the lines of "I hope [livejournal.com profile] ladywarringford deigns to share a bit more of her considerable knowledge of all things Sparrowish."

And you have not disappointed us! Thanks again.
