Drabble Challenge: 'Inspire'

Trying to do a little writing (in between bouts with the paperwork). This is a drabble written for the current challenge at Black Pearl Sails. Apologies to tessabeth for once again borrowing her OC without permission.

~ Youthful Inspiration ~

Captain John Tobias was a man's man, a pirate's pirate: big and handsome and wild, but canny, and skilled at command. Men vied to crew for him on the Black Pearl.

He took Jack, just eighteen, the hero of the Salt Cay incident. Tobias'd heard of it, scoffed, then met Jack and knew he'd found his heir. The Pearls shrugged, but Jack, quicksilver and capable, proved himself. All eyes warmed to the lad.

So, when Jack was made First, everyone saw the justice of it. But Hector's eyes were warm no longer: instead, they blazed deep, with fire and ice.

I think this is the first time I've ever noticed that you made an effort to keep things under 100 words XD It actually looks like there are words missing. Not that this is a bad thing-- it just lends a rather peculiar, and interesting, style to things, that isn't at all like your usual style. More abstract, in a way.

... I feel dumb, too, cuz I had no idea who "Hector" was until someone commented on it being Barbossa XD I'm must not be a hardcore PotC fan.

I'm not sure the name Hector is even in the DVD extras. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush made up the name when they were discussing the character, I think, and said as much in interviews.

Drabbles tend to lean toward the abstract, sometimes, although I don't think I left anything out. Glad you liked it though.

As others have said, great description of Jack, those three short words say so much :-) And Hector's eyes changing, blazing deep, with fire and ice when Jack is made First, that's a chilling and effective portent of what will come... I really like this, dear!

I don't think I thought about it either, prior to reading tessabeth's Picaresque which deals with this period of Jack's life. That story was so good that the whole set up is canon for my PotC universe now.
