Favicons R Us

Went to a Photoshop seminar yesterday at the Los Angeles Convention Center (a real adventure, in all the traffic), and one of the tips/tricks I picked up was how to make and install favicons. Made a teeny weeny black pearl for Black Pearl Tales!! Go me! Next up: an itty bitty coonskin cap for the school website. :)

No, why? I only learned the name at that seminar! Actually it was a little article in Layers magazine, which is about the Adobe Creative Suite, but once I knew the name I knew I could google it and get all kinds of info.

I didn't know what a favicon was either, so porridgebird is not alone. Looked it up, spent some time figuring out how to make it show up. Very lovely. You are so talented. I'm lucky if I can handle text!

As I told porridgebird, I only found out what the name was at that seminar -- I'd been wondering for weeks!

I was going to do a little anchor, but couldn't find a graphic I liked -- it has to be a pretty simple one to look decent at 16x16 pixels. I think the pearl turned out nice though.

There isn't any! All you do is save your 16x16 graphic as "favicon.ico" (I got an extention for Photoshop that allowed me to save in that format -- just google "making favicon" and the link will come up) and load it into the root folder (where your index page is) -- the newer browsers are programmed to "see" the little icon and load it.

Hmmm...it's not showing up in my browsers for some reason. I'm on a Mac and have tried both Safari and IE. Has anyone else had any problems viewing it?

Not so far, but there is a line of html you can insert in the head of the index page -- I didn't have to do that to see it in Firefox (I'm on a PC) or in Explorer, but maybe one needs to do that for Macs. I just don't know that much about it, yet.

Yeah, I just checked the source on our website, and I have it practically right after my metatags. There is one line of style sheet code, but then it's there. Let me know if you want me to check the site again with different broswers off my Mac. I love favicons, and I would love to see the Pearl as one. BTW, the site looks great! You can tell it's a labor of love.

Hmm... I see it in the Favorites list on IE now that I've bookmarked it there, but it's not showing up in Mozilla. :-(

Apparently not all browsers support it. I use Firefox (which is a sort of derivative of Mozilla, I think) and IE, and I can see it in both of those. But I'll try putting that line of code in the head section of the index page -- maybe that'll help.

That might do it... don't know. (I'm only moderately geeky when it comes to these things, all my knowledge/ability has been gained by doing so I'm very bad when it comes to how or why things either work or don't!)
