Drabble Challenge Reply: 'Anything'
Mar. 6th, 2006 05:13 pmThe morning they were to leave the inn and return to Port Royal, Elizabeth woke in the faint, near-dawn light and lay with closed eyes, savoring her contentment. It was raining again. She could hear the sound of it, patting on the glass of the window and on the eaves outside. She could hear the sound of James's even breathing as well, and feel it, too, for she lay nested in his embrace, his warmth all along her back and legs, across her waist where his arm held her close, and on one breast where his hand cupped, possessively.
What a gift, this love of his. For during this first week of their marriage –this honeymoon – this idyll – she had come to some understanding of what he felt for her. His reticence had been breached and finally broken in the onslaught of passion. She had not expected it. She had been thrilled, then, increasingly, dismayed.
She had said to him, finally, two nights past, "James… was it always like this?"
"Always," he whispered, his breath on her lips, for they had just finished coupling for the third time that day – insatiable, the pair of them!
She had reached up to hold his face between her hands, examining him closely, a crease between her brows. "No. I'm not…"
"Hush!" he said. "You are worth everything. Anything."
"You gave me up." And she was suddenly close to tears, knowing now what that must have cost him.
"You were Will's."
"Yes."
"But now… now you are mine." And there was such joy, such complete satisfaction in his voice, such love in his eyes, that she had to kiss him again, tremulous with the wonder of two hearts made newly whole.
Now he stirred sleepily against her, drawing her even closer. "Good morning, wife," he murmured low, near her ear.
She turned over, flesh sliding delightfully against flesh, to face him. "Good morning, husband," she returned, rubbing her nose against his. Then she drew back slightly, and fixed him with her gaze. "Was it true, what you told me? The other night? Because, if it was, I have a request."
He chuckled, ruefully. "What a weapon I've given you. Yes, it's true, God help me. And what is this request, Miss Mischief?"
"That's Mrs. Mischief, if you please. And it's only… can we not stay on here, James? Just one more day?"
He smiled. "Anything," he said, and kissed her.

Date: 2006-03-07 04:32 am (UTC)GM, I had to go back and read your two little prequels to this, and despite my not being a Norri-Beth shipper, I do find your treatment of them exquisite. This ficlet by itself is sublime in each moment, and taken with the other two it is simply delightful. You do such a nice job of respecting what Will and Elizabeth had been, and making Elizabeth/James a whole, splendid new beginning without lessening anything that went before. I love the journey of discovery this little trilogy unfolds, so thoughtful and luscious and just mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. :-)
Thank you for this. It warms a body on a chilly evening, yes it does!
Cheers ~
Erin

Date: 2006-03-07 02:37 pm (UTC)But in this little world, where Will has passed on, Elizabeth's remarriage to James is a logical progression, and I think they both would be able to appreciate each other more fully and truthfully at this point in their lives.
I'm very glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for letting me know, and for such thoughtful comments. :)

Such a melt-inspiring thing for James to say. Think I'll just float around on your pretty Norribeth cloud this morning.

I'm hardcore Norribeth all the way, as well as a hopeless romantic, and I *adore* this series. It's perfect for when I'm low or a bit lonely. Or just in the mood for romance.
Sexy, and romantic and sweeter than a box of macaroons.
Two favourite lines:
>>She could hear the sound of James's even breathing as well, and feel it, too, for she lay nested in his embrace, his warmth all along her back and legs, across her waist where his arm held her close, and on one breast where his hand cupped, possessively.<<
Soooooo sexy!
>>His reticence had been breached and finally broken in the onslaught of passion.<<
It's so very James, this simple sentence. Also, very Elizabeth, not to realise that his reticence was a form of self defence, rather than austerity.
Oh, I love it all.

Again, I'm so in love with your Norribeth'verse.

Date: 2006-03-07 04:34 pm (UTC)It's up, and it's beautiful and I love it and want to huggle it and run away with it. And you see how well it works ;-) Still get choked up every time I get to:
"Hush!" he said. "You are worth everything. Anything."
"You gave me up." And she was suddenly close to tears, knowing now what that must have cost him.
