Wrote most of this a while back for the “Spark” drabble challenge, and was inspired to finish it up this morning. [livejournal.com profile] hereswith assures me it's not exactly like anyone else's Kiss!fic, in spite of the plethora of same, post-DMC.

~ Only a Kiss ~

She should have known better.

From their first meeting, dazed and dripping on the dock at Port Royal, there had been a heat and a truth between them. She might be young, and yet a maid, but she knew enough. He was different. This was different. It was something she had never experienced before, not even with Will.

He was not the pirate from her storybooks. And she was not the lady she’d been bred to be.

She should have remembered why she’d been wary, why she’d kept her distance. She should have known a kiss wasn’t only a kiss.

~.~

Awww. No, it's not. And it remains to be seen how hard she'll try to dodge that! *g*

Or what he'll have to say about it. That kiss made so many things more complicated.

Thank you for commenting!

Lovely! An awful lot of heat smoldering there. And I absolutely love this:
She should have remembered why she’d been wary, why she’d kept her distance.
Was our dear Lizzie a bit distracted by piratical proximity, hmmmm? *g*

Difficult not to be distracted, I would think. I'm very glad you enjoyed this. :)

That's lovely. I especially like the balance of:

He was not the pirate from her storybooks. And she was not the lady she’d been bred to be.

Nicely done!

Ooh! What a treat. "Dazed and dripping on the dock at Port Royal" Dazed indeed. There are more little nuances that I'd like to point out here as well, but others have already done it for me, so I'll leave it at that.

I really cannot wait to know the aftermath of that kiss!

Me too. Why isn't it May yet?

Exactly a hundred words! Go me!

But not W/E. Must work on that, after dinner.

*many hugs*

I can't do exacts! Never, not even during work when I'm told "15 inches, no more or less." I still write 15.3 or something strange like that.

So, if you need help on the W/E, let me know and I can give you a prompt or something.

*hugs back*

Lovliness. Of course :-) And I see that no one has mentioned my favourite bit yet, which is this ...there had been a heat and a truth between them. Though I adore the following lines, as well. He was not the pirate from her storybooks. And she was not the lady she’d been bred to be.

I still think that's far more true of Jack than of Will, though Will has known Elizabeth so much longer.

Thank you again for looking it over at short notice. I'm so happy you liked it!

Gorgeous. So short and yet so powerful.

"She might be young, and yet a maid, but she knew enough. He was different. This was different." -- So true. Marvelous job. :)

Thank you! I'm always gratified when I can keep a drabble to a hundred words. But this one was easy - started out at about 65! I'm very happy you enjoyed it.

There shall be J/E tension in AWE if only because of that kiss.

Yes, I think so, too. Is it May yet?

I loved this - spare and elegant and every blessed word placed with intent and nuance.

"From their first meeting, dazed and dripping on the dock at Port Royal, there had been a heat and a truth between them."

I know I'm repeating other's comments, but this made me shiver, each of the dozen times I read it. Beautiful.

Thanks so much for the wonderful comments! I'm very happy to know it worked so well for so many readers. I almost didn't bother finishing it -- there has been so much written about the famous kiss, and by far better authors than I. But sometimes it's fun to try to distill an idea into a hundred words, the "official" count for a drabble.

there had been a heat and a truth between them

I like that - it suggests that what's between them is beyond the control of either of them. A little bit dangerous and forbidden!

And the last line of course!

That's the truth of it, certainly. The compass doesn't lie. *G*
