This is a little more W/E -- on the way to World's End -- for prompt 67 on the [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 table ("Snow") and also for the current challenge at Black Pearl Sails ("Trunk").

67. Snow

Ice began to slide by them in the frigid water. When the first flakes of snow began to fall, Will said to Elizabeth, "Come below. There's no use freezing when you're not on watch."

"No. Not now. I need to stay." She stood silent at the rail, looking out at the vast ocean, hugging herself against the cold.

Barbossa beckoned Will. "There's a trunk in the aft hold," he said quietly. "Fetch 'er something."

It was of oriental design, rosewood bound with brass and, on opening it, Will discovered it full of fur rugs and capes. He took the finest of them for her.

With a brief nod to Barbossa, Will placed the cape, warm and soft, around Elizabeth's slender shoulders.

"Oh! Thank you!" She turned to him.

Her smile, the first they’d exchanged in days, dazzled him, and his heart ached for love-- and for what might have been.

Will angst, Will angst, Will angst! {Bounces happily at work} :)

This is the other thing I think it's fairly well-known by those who know me that I'm a sucker for: Will angst. Geez, put Will in mortal danger plus some Will angst, with a side of Defiant! Will tied up, and I'll be mindlessly happy for days. :)

I'm trying to come up with a coherent review here, but my brain is too happy with the Will angst that you've done so well here. :) Please accept my humble happy bouncing as a compliment. :)

Augh. It hurts us, precious. But it's so very good.

This is lovely, and a little sad, too! As usual, you describe the scene perfectly, in so few words. My favourite bits...

"No. Not now. I need to stay." She stood silent at the rail, looking out at the vast ocean... Because she would do that.

He took the finest of them for her. Because he would do that :-)

Her smile, the first they’d exchanged in days, dazzled him, and his heart ached for love -- and for what might have been. I can imagine that it would be like this, that he would feel like this, especially if they haven't talked about things.

Goooooddd stufff!!! I stopped everything, just to read. Always do, every time you post, and I've never been disappointed.

"..not now..." "...heart ached for love..."

Better than chocolate!

The trip to AWE could be the trip from Hell...kind of like having to travel with your reviled sister-in-law. And, oddly, everyone will be experiencing their own kind of hell.

Thanks....loved it!

Very bittersweet. I enjoyed it very much. I've been looking for good W/E fic (or even drabbles) and haven't found much so far.

What a wonderful compliment. Thank you so much!

everyone will be experiencing their own kind of hell.

That's the truth. But in all cases, it'll be worth it.

Very happy you liked this one. Thank you for reading and for your kind comments!

I believe [livejournal.com profile] the_dala just wrote one and posted it today, Calm Before the Storm, and her older fic, Firecracker is great W/E, too. [livejournal.com profile] fabu also has some wonderful W/E stories at Cultural Infidelities.

Glad you liked this one! Thanks so much for letting me know.

It's a nice little portrait, especially of Will. I don't think he's a masochist - to attend someone even if he thinks they're out of reach - I think he's just concerned about those he cares about, even if he's upset with them. (Hey, that's life, isn't it?)

Nice avatar, too.

But in all cases, it'll be worth it.

I don't know about that. But I WILL be glad to get it all over with, at least!

I don't think people who love and want to take care of those they love are masochists. He's a good man, and I don't think he'd stop caring for Elizabeth, or loving her, even if she hasn't told him the whole story behind that kiss (and from the look he gives her in the trailer, when Jack says one of them succeeded in killing him, it appears she hasn't).

I don't know about that.

I think Jack Sparrow is worth quite a lot, even flakey as he is at times. *G*

But I WILL be glad to get it all over with, at least!

We are certainly as one on that score. It's making me crazy.

Thank you so much for commenting. I'm glad you liked it!

Thank you! At least I'm able to produce drabbles for you. I think it'll be much easier to write after the movie comes out and we know where we are with the story and characters.

Did you read [livejournal.com profile] the_dala's new W/E fic?

I think you're right about the outcome of the characters and their relationship(s). That's probably why most of us are writing fics between CotBP and DMC.

Yes! I loved it. Kinda a prelude to my "Lessons."

I've been working on a new one for a while and I'm having a terrible time finishing it. *bites nails*

I wasn't implying the story portrayed that - the opposite, actually. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I think Jack Sparrow is worth quite a lot, even flakey as he is at times

That I'll agree with. I thought you were referring - as I was - to the whole process of waiting for AWE to happen.

Have you considered the hard time you're having is because you want to write W/E and while you're fairly confident things will end that way, and hope for it, there's part of your writing brain that really doubts it? And that's somehow interfering with being able to finish what you *really* want to produce? (I know how hard it was to write J/W after DMC - I haven't done much and I really had to push and shove myself to get any inspiration for it.)

I'm done with the W/E part of the fic and I did consider those thoughts for a while. And, while I think they did hinder the process at first, I don't think it's why I'm not able to write now.
I'm now having trouble with the ending of it. Really, Weatherby and Estrella.

That, and I'm burned out on writing from work.

I really like the visual effect of that part of the trailer. And it makes perfect sense that Will would be the one to wrap her up in that blanket, and that she'd refuse to go below.

I like this drabble because you don't realize quite how things have been for them until the very last sentence. There's more than one big chill going on here...

Occupational hazard ....

(BTW, are you so burned out you wouldn't be interested in submitting a couple of clips and a resume to my editor? He mentioned something about wanting writers in the eastern part of the state, and I brought you up again.)

I have been working on my resume to send out after Tuesday (appointment with the neurosurgeon), so yeah. You will need to send me the address to send the stuff.
Does he only want agriculture stories? I haven't written one of those in a couple of years. *bites nails*

Pretty much anything having to do with ag, farmers, rural life. Including government actions (mostly state, possibly if there's any federal participation as well) and laws/legislation. And in case I didn't make it clear - but I think you already know - it's just freelance, not full-time or anything.

Don't worry - when I started 5 years ago, I'd never written ag before and had to teach myself. And now I work at the damn place! LOL

Date: 2007-03-25 04:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yoiebear.livejournal.com
I've written some ag stuff, but not much. If I send an airport story and a city council, would that be all right?

Date: 2007-03-25 04:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
I think anything you wrote between 400 and 600 words that shows you're competent, know how to interview sources, and can explain concepts to readers or interpret government is valuable.

Date: 2007-03-25 05:01 am (UTC)

OK, I can do that no later than next weekend.

And, yes, I understand it's freelance. I'm looking for work elsewhere, but anything extra will be very welcome.

Thanks!

Aaah, poor lonely Will!

But mostly I just love the idea that Barbossa has a whole rug shop's worth of furs stashed away. If I'm very good, will you wrap Jack in one and send him to me? Please?

I really like the visual effect of that part of the trailer.

Whatever the movie is, it's bound to be visually stunning. I really can't wait until May, even knowing we may be disappointed in the ending.
