Two Drabbles
Jan. 21st, 2008 10:45 pmWhile I was waiting THREE HOURS AT WALMART OMG to get a new car battery and oil change, I wrote a couple of drabbles, exactly a hundred words apiece, for this week's and last week's themes at Black Pearl Sails.
hereswith is asleep, so these are unbetaed. But hey! A hundred words! What could go wrong?
Theme: Five
~ Bitter Harvest ~
"Five lashes be owed, I believe it is."
Years since he'd laid eyes on Will and now it came to this. A roar of despair escaped Bill as the Captain thrust the whip at him.
As well ask mercy of the sea.
"The cat's out of the bag, Mister Turner," Jones gloated. "Your issue will feel its sting, be it by the Bo'sun's hand, or your own."
He'd seen what the bo'sun could do to a man.
They stripped the shirt from Will's flawless back. Bill gathered himself, shuddering, and wondered at the efficacy of Jack's revenge, witting or no.
~.~
Theme: Slight
~ All of Them Are True ~
It was true Jack Sparrow had saved her life, but as Elizabeth watched Norrington's disdain and manhandling of her pirate, she thought the rest must have been exaggeration, if not outright lies. How could the slight, dripping, bedraggled figure before her be the hero of all those tales she loved? She was moved to defend the poor creature, berating both Norrington and her father on Sparrow’s behalf, but seemingly to no avail.
And then, in a flash, the chain was ‘round her neck, the breath of a feral yet melodious voice was in her ear, and she no longer doubted.

Date: 2008-01-22 07:17 am (UTC)And the second one is fun. Yes, Jack didn't look like much until he struck. Elizabeth has indeed found her pirate. Lovely use for a boring wait!

Date: 2008-01-22 07:29 am (UTC)So, so true. I think Bootstrap carries around a lot of guilt, what with one thing and another. And I don't doubt Jack knew what he was doing when he sent Will over to the Dutchman: Will would survive and succeed in getting the key, but perhaps not unscathed.
So happy you enjoyed these! Thank you for the quick feedback -- I really appreciate it.

He is not a large man, is he? Especially surrounded by all those soldiers. A sparrow indeed.
the breath of a feral yet melodious voice was in her ear
*shiver* (the good kind, of course!)

Jack didn't look very legendary or intimidating at that very moment, that's true. Poor little bird... *pets*

Date: 2008-01-22 02:25 pm (UTC)Jack description is always fun, he's such a bundle of contrasts. I'm sure he'd enjoy the petting, just before he kissed your hand, grabbed his hat, and said, "Sorry, love, have to fly," as he escaped through the window. *g*

Date: 2008-01-22 11:11 am (UTC)And as for the second, I think this just sums up Jack completely. Let them underestimate him until just the right moment ;)
*whispers* It's disdain btw :)

Date: 2008-01-22 02:34 pm (UTC)So happy you enjoyed the second, too -- he really does know how to wait for the opportune moment.
And this is why I need a beta reader. Fixed! Thank you!

Date: 2008-01-22 06:35 pm (UTC)Had to do SOMETHING while I was waiting for the car. They told me 45 minutes, originally -- if I'd known it was going to take that long I'd have had someone take me home -- or gone somewhere else. Grrrr. Anyway, at least it wasn't a complete waste of time.
I'm very happy you enjoyed these! And thank you again for writing A Lady and His Swain -- Mmmmmmm!!

Date: 2008-01-23 12:55 am (UTC)Jack does have a minor streak of cruelty in him. And people are shocked that Will attempted mutiny on him in AWE. *G*

Date: 2008-01-23 01:59 am (UTC)Really? I thought the whole idea was that they were all turning more piratey as the story went along, and his mutiny would seem to go along with that idea. Jack didn't seem too upset about it, though he ensured that the manner of Will's arrival on Beckett's ship was less than comfortable. I think Jack has this idea that Turners are like cats: throw them any which way and they'll land on their feet, and distract the big dogs to boot. That's probably why Bootstrap didn't seem overly fond of Jack in their first scene in DMC -- I can imagine them having a number of hair raising adventures in their younger days.
Thanks for reading, and commenting!

Date: 2008-01-23 08:30 pm (UTC)The second one, too, was different. You never think of Jack as a "poor creature" after he escapes, you know. Just like Elizabeth

Date: 2008-01-23 09:18 pm (UTC)I don't think revenge was Jack's foremost thought, certainly, which is why I included "witting or no" at the end, but I think Bill carries around a lot of guilt and that's what he'd think.
Glad you liked these. It was fun getting them down to hundred word drabbles.

Date: 2008-01-23 11:04 pm (UTC)I am always delighted at the pixie dust you sprinkle in just a few words... these were both such clear snapshots of key moments, and your spin on them is striking.

I love that line. I'd like to see your take on more of the Jack/Elizabeth interaction in the first movie.

Hm. I know this fic focuses more on Bill and Will, but this line says a lot about Davy and Calypso and, well, life in general.
Elizabeth watched Norrington's disdain and manhandling of her pirate
Hehe. Her pirate.
Jack really knows how to work people. Elizabeth learned from the best.
