The Lake Isle of Innisfree
by William Butler Yeats

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight 's all a-glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

I must still be half asleep because my initial reaction was "That's very pretty, but I'm sure you'd get tired of just eating beans and honey pretty soon"

LOL! You have a point. Although it doesn't say that's all he eats.

You're welcome! That's why I love it, too, of course. :)

Yes, we do. This poem seems to distill that longing into something tangible. I'm glad you enjoyed reading it again. :)

I really love this poem. I remember when I was nine we had to memorise a poem for school that had something to do with water, and I learned this- I still know it by heart. It was my grandfather's favourite (he was born in rural Ireland and missed it for most of his life, I think) and it always reminds me of him, sitting in the garden in the afternoons or reading us stories aloud.

That's lovely that this poem was so dear and familiar to you. I think there is a special power in poetry that can bind our hearts together.

One of my favourite poems ever. It still produces the same reaction in me no matter how many times I read it. So beautiful and evocative, and 'peace comes dropping slow' will forever be one of those 'I wish I'd written that' lines.
