A 125 words in reply to last week's drabble challenge prompt, 'Doldrums'...

The Doldrums, also called the "equatorial calms", is a nautical term for the intertropical convergence zone.

~ Convergence ~

At noon, the sun’s hot enough to make the pitch bubble in the seams of the deck. No breath of wind, save that once, when the ship was tossed about like a cockle shell in the violence of a squall.

Yet Jack’s content as a cucumber. The Pearls man the sweeps at night, swim at dawn, and rest in the heat of the day. That squall provided a surfeit of fresh water, even enough for Lizzie to sponge herself clean and cool as evening comes on.

Jack watches her. She glints gold in the sunset light that streams through the gallery windows. The sight’s rich, satisfying, and almost compensation for having to rise and go to work, ending another dreamlike day of drowsy love.

Almost.

Oh beautiful! You do Jack so well, I can almost see that lazy, gold-glinting smile!

What Amenirdis said.

And I'll add: that icon makes an excellent match!

Made the icon years ago, and rarely use it, but it did seem appropriate here. I'm so glad you enjoyed the drabble! Thank you for commenting.

Oh, much as I do Not like to being becalmed, I truly loved these words to describe the long day when there's naught to send you on your way. And it doesn't hurt not even one little bit, to piggyback on Jack's wicked watching of the lovely Miss Swann. Wow! It's exactly how things would have reversed, working through the cool night, laying back in the day, whatever relief one might find in whatever quiet corner. Very fine indeed!

Much as I love the image of pitch reduced to bubbling goo by the baking heat, this
She glints gold in the sunset light that streams through the gallery windows.
makes me dance with glee! Brings Tess's pagan diety scene to mind. ;)

What a powerful picture you paint here with your words: the heat of the day, and the gentle heat between Jack & Elizabeth. Love the thought of them, lying in bed all day, alternating between napping and making sweet "dreamlike...drowsy love" during the day's hottest hours. A very satisfying picture, indeed! :-)

And seeing Elizabeth through Jack's eyes as she bathes ... as she "glints gold in the sunset light". Simply priceless!

Sheer magic you've woven here with your words! Utter perfection! :-)

Even the doldrums would be happy under such circumstances, I think. Glad you enjoyed it, too! Thank you so much for your kind words, they're very much appreciated.
