PotC4 - World Premier OMG!!
May. 10th, 2011 07:39 amIt was a pirate's life for me last week, meeting my buddies
tndixie and
compassrose7577 in the real OC for a few days of beach, fabulous food, and piratey fun at Disneyland. We played in the parks and Saturday night we attended the world premier of On Stranger Tides, walking the same black carpet that the stars did. It was an amazing night, and I have lots of pix, just haven't had time to get them ready to post yet as there was a big party for me (!!) on Sunday when we got home and after that I was too dead tired. So pix tonight, and if there is anything you want to know about the movie, ask away!
Speaking of pix, though,
corrielle went and stood on the sidelines at the black carpet event and has an entertaining report and lots of pics here, go check it out! She got way closer to the stars than I did, I must say.
*hugs you all*

Date: 2011-05-10 04:03 pm (UTC)Is it GOOD? Is Jack lovely? Is it less handwavy than AWE?

Date: 2011-05-11 05:26 am (UTC)It is very good, I think, and it can stand alone, I don’t believe one would even need to have seen any of the previous three to enjoy it. There are only very minor references to the other movies, and I think the action and characterizations allow an understanding of the relationships. The plot is typically complicated in detail, but that’s part of the fun, of course. It all makes sense, in the way CotBP did.
Jack is wonderful, and there’s a LOT of him, he really carries the film.
Excellent! I may go to the El Capitan for the midnight show on the 20th, which is when it comes out here, though I’ll have to work at least a half day on Friday (before I go see it again – squeee!!).

Date: 2011-05-10 04:05 pm (UTC)Okay, I want all the details about the black ? carpet and pics and all that.
And about the movie, I want to know
-- Did you like it? Did you think it was good?
-- Is it a cliffhanger?
-- At the sneak peak thing at Disneyland, they said there is something about voodoo in the movie. That creeps me out, what's the deal?
-- Is Barbossa as awesome as he was in AWE?
Okay, that's it, I think, for now. I'm willing to wait for the rest. I just saw a new commercial last night that made me squee, and I have to say, with Lost over, not a lot makes me squee these days. :D

Date: 2011-05-11 05:41 am (UTC)I had a fabulous five days, way too much fun, still so tired! Had dinner with some other friends last night, too, the fun hasn’t stopped yet.
Next post. A very different experience than the previous two premiers, obviously, when I was sitting on the curb on Main Street, USA.
Yes, and yes! Hopefully your mileage won’t vary too much. I really enjoyed it, though I have to say I really missed Will and Elizabeth, too. Thank God for fic.
Not as such. There are elements that can be continued and expanded – particularly the Pearl’s situation – but most could be dropped, or set aside for a later time and it would still make sense.
Blackbeard is into the black magic voodoo thing, an element they got out of the novel, Tim Powers’ On Stranger Tides. He’s very scary and grim, and unlike Barbossa in the first story, or Davy Jones in #2 & #3, one feels virtually no sympathy for him, which I think makes him a less interesting character. It’s hard to see why his daughter Angelica cares for him enough to want to “save his soul” – it seems pretty hopeless. The voodoo is a bit scary, but on the whole I don’t think it’s any worse than the stuff we’ve seen in the other three, so no worries. There’s only one scene that squicked me at all, and I’m notoriously weak of stomach when it comes to violence.
YES!!!! In his Royal Navy Privateer persona he’s a purse made from a sow’s ear, so to speak, and hilariously so – God, I adore Geoffrey Rush!!! And in the end, well, he’s back, that’s all I can say. And his scenes with Jack are great, I was thinking “lj user="p0wdermonkey"> would LOVE this!” even as I watched.

Date: 2011-05-11 05:42 am (UTC)Jack is fabulous, and it really seems to be a return to what his character was in CotBP. He is funny and clever and wonderfully appealing, and a very capable pirate, though he has a terrible foe in Blackbeard. His love/hate relationship with Angelica is very entertaining, it’s hard to tell if either of them really love each other, though Jack keeps saving her – she has a good heart under the pirate façade, unlike her father (and is he really her father? That’s a question…though why else would she care for Blackbeard if she wasn’t? Not a likeable man at all.) ‘Feelings’ may be too strong a word for what Jack felt/feels for her, he’s attracted to her and doesn’t trust her much more than an inch. We’ll have to look to fic for lasting romance, I don’t think we’ll find it in the movies.

Date: 2011-05-10 04:57 pm (UTC)my questions
does jack kiss angelica? please tell me !!!
is jack in love with her (and vice versa) ?
is it a cliffhanger?
did you meet johnny ?

Date: 2011-05-11 05:47 am (UTC)Yes! Though what he says afterwards is rather hilariously ambiguous. Highlight for Extreme Spoiler: “I always wanted to do that!” he says – and is it because she’s an old flame or because she looks like a duplicate of him? (Very near the beginning of the movie she’s been impersonating him in order to recruit crew for the Queen Anne’s Revenge.)
He may have had “feelings” for her, maybe still does – or “feelings” may be too strong a word. At least that’s what he claims. As for Angelica, it’s sort of the same situation, in reverse. The actors, writers, etc. did a nice job making their relationship “love/hate”, just as advertised.
Not precisely, there are elements that may show up in the next film, issues that may or may not be resolved, but it’s not half a movie, the way DMC was.
No! I wasn’t anywhere near him. I was sitting way up on the west side of the theater (there were 3000 seats), though I could see the stage in front of the screen clearly and there was a big projection of the actors on the screen as they came out to greet the audience. He looked good, from what I could see, and happy to be there, happier than he seemed to be at the AWE premier. The closest I’ve been to him is when we came for the DMC premier in ’06 and he came over and signed a magazine cover for me, and spoke briefly with a little girl who was standing next to us.

Date: 2011-05-10 06:06 pm (UTC)I'd also like to know whether you felt the characters ... well, were IC. *g* How does that thing with Jack and Angelica work - chemistry?
Like 0nthe0therhand I'd like to know about the serious!Jack moments. From the little clips I've seen I assume that there are some.
Then: Do we get to know where that cross on Jack's cheek comes from? *g*
And: What's the Pearl doing in that bottle?!

Date: 2011-05-11 05:55 am (UTC)It’s more like CotBP in tone, but I have to say I really missed Will and Elizabeth, I loved their characters from the beginning of CotBP, in spite of Jack being so amazingly distracting, and I recall that Orlando had a huge fan base, even I liked him from the LotR movies, and Keira was just becoming well known, too, I’d seen her in Bend It Like Beckham already and I found that she had a really magnetic appeal in CotBP. Phillip and Syrena are OK, but that Wow! factor that Orlando and Keira had seems missing with those two – or at least that was my impression.
Having more of Jack – and such fabulous Jack, too – partly makes up for it, but I’m not sure this movie would inspire us like CotBP did if we didn’t already love some of the characters.
The characters are very well done, no problem with that, either in writing or acting. And the actors, writers, etc. did a great job giving Jack/Angelica a love/hate relationship. The chemistry is definitely there, IMO.
There are, but I can’t think of any specific ones to use as examples. All I can say is that the Jack from CotBP is back. He’s a hard man to pin down, multifaceted as he is, but he’s both very human and crazy brilliant.
No! I’m still wondering. Or if they told us, I missed that entirely, and I was really trying to pay attention throughout. Also still wondering about the weirdly lighter hair.
Highlight for Spoiler: Blackbeard has the Pearl and many more, the makings of a whole fleet, miniaturized and stored away in bottles; it’s one of his magical voodoo abilities.

Date: 2011-05-10 06:33 pm (UTC)I'm avoiding spoilers, but I'd just like to know from a fellow fan - was the story satisfying? I'm worried that I'm just going to spend 90% of it missing Will and Elizabeth and James...

Date: 2011-05-11 05:56 am (UTC)I did miss Will and Elizabeth a lot. As I said above, Phillip and Syrena are just not as interesting a pair. Phillip lacks Will’s snark and passion, and Syrena is interesting, but the fact that she’s not human comes through very clearly, which is good acting, but bad as far as us being able to relate to her.
And James. Oh dear. How we miss him. I didn’t come to love him until I started reading fic, yours for example, but you and other superb writers had me convinced of his excellence pretty early on. There are no comparable characters in OST. Barbossa is the naval commander, and it’s quite hilarious to watch him pretend he’s not pure pirate. James will always, always be missed, I think.
Yet, in spite of these changes, it’s a good movie, it stands on its own very well, and it’s a lot of fun to watch. Jack carries it, he’s got more screen time than in the other movies, and he’s in top form. His chemistry with Angelica is evident, and though it will never be love’s young dream between them, there’s a lot of potential for entertaining encounters, in fic and maybe otherwise, too. Another point: Gibbs has some really interesting scenes, and I expect we’ll be seeing more of him in PotC5, which is all to the good – I doubt if there’s a PotC fan out there that doesn’t enjoy Gibbs.

Date: 2011-05-11 05:58 am (UTC)It’s not half a movie, it stands alone, you don’t even have to have seen CotBP to enjoy it, I believe. There are some issues at the end that can be resolved/explored in the next movie – or they could just gloss over them and move on to something entirely new. I have to say, the Easter egg provides for some interesting speculation, and the Pearl’s fate does, too. Loved the way it ended, truly, the loose ends wrapped up, and yet not!

Date: 2011-05-11 06:12 am (UTC)No blowing up/burning of the Pearl, I assure you.
Highlight for Spoiler: Blackbeard captured her with black voodoo magic, shrank her, and has her stored in a bottle.
I liked it, it works well with all the action. That escape scene in the beginning is huge fun, I loved the whole beginning of it, really, and I think you will too!.
Only 3000 got to view the movie, and 2300 of those were in the entertainment business, etc. 700 tickets were sold to the public, from what I’ve heard. It was so much fun, so glad I went!

Date: 2011-05-13 03:23 am (UTC)I didn't feel it odd that there were no specific references. It starts off with a bang and Jack is pretty much taken up with this new adventure, too much so to do much looking back.
