~ Homecoming ~
“And what the devil’s this?” Jack demanded, his purr turning to a growl as he grasped a lock of Elizabeth’s tangled hair and closely examined the colorful bead that was tied into it, a favorite bauble that he thought he’d lost. He scowled, and noted her guilty flush. “So that’s where it went!”
“You have so many, I didn’t think you’d notice,” Elizabeth said, defensively. She squirmed a bit and shoved at his chest, for he’d had her pinned against a convenient bulkhead to greet and was now exerting considerably more force since he’d caught her in mischief. “Jack, stop it!”
“Won’t,” he asserted. “Why’d you take it?”
She stilled, glaring. The words were dragged from her: “I... I didn’t know when you’d be back.”
His brows rose and he smiled a slow smile. “Ah! A keepsake, then. You knew you’d miss old Jack.”
“Insufferable,” she muttered.
“Maybe. But what’re you, eh? Pilfering, pouting, pretty... Pirate!“ Same word, same tone, and she looked as startled, as he’d meant her to, before he kissed her.
