I finally managed to come up with something for this week's drabble challenge at Black Pearl Sails--

But You Have Heard Of Me

Fleeting beauty has its uses,
Sun-kissed skin, and smiling lips;
And one’s effects are well enough:
Sharp-edged swords, and sable ships.
But history craves a deeper theme:
Tales of courage, sly delights,
A heart comprised of black and gold,
As true as starry summer nights.

And you claim you can't write poetry! Shame on you, missy!

I especially liked the last three lines--"heart comprised of black and gold" most especially, the contrast and almost double-meaning there--and "sable ships." A simple piece, yet capturing Jack's complexity. Very nice!

Thank you. Perhaps it was the angst. It's been rather a roller coaster of an evening--some good news, and some very bad news.

I had that heart/black/gold line early on, but couldn't think of exactly what to put with it. Funny how poetry used to just pop into my head when I was very young. It's been a long time. But maybe I'm just out of practice.

Glad you liked it. :)

It is like riding a bicycle, isn't it?

Ick, it sounds like the good news doesn't quite counterweight the bad news. *sends good news vibes and hugs your way*

That's really lovely! It flows so well, and says a lot in a few words.

I am sorry about your bad news :(( *hug*

Thank you for the compliment and for the sympathy. The bad news was a health issue with a fellow employee's husband: surgery was had last week and they found out the unfortunate results of the biopsy late this afternoon.

The good news was that my new boss has passed her probation and is permanent in the position. :)

Glad you enjoyed the poem!

AH HA! I *knew* you could (see last nights reply to your reply to Hereswith's "Spirit of the Sea")and you did not disappoint. Absolutely lovely. Every. Last. Word. Very much worth the wait.

It was actually due to your encouragement that I kept trying--usually when a piece of writing doesn't just fall from the pen I give up on it pretty quickly, and set it aside for another day.

I'm glad you liked it. And it rhymes! WhooHoo!

Yay! The words did co-operate, after all ;-) Beautiful, really beautiful, I liked the line... Sharp-edged swords, and sable ships... most of all, I think, very nice alliteration.

Sorry about the bad news, dear! *hugs*

So few words, so full of sensual imagery.

Have I ever said how I adore everything you do? ;-)
Cheers ~

My lady, you are a poet if or not you know it.

I feel I'm not usually one for poetry because there are few poems that I've read that have delighted me but then there are the writers like you who have just the right words.

Essential Sparrow, this. Perfect!

This is lovely! I love the alliteration of this line particularly: Sharp-edged swords, and sable ships: the way it mirror the second line's sibliance...and the last two lines are just wonderful! Brava!

niiiiicccee poetry!

Hey, nice stuff! I sure wish I had a mind for rhyming. I can only spout poetry when I'm wasted, and usually it's someone else's poetry, no mine!

I had those last two lines right away, and then it took me the rest of the week to manage the rest. Sometimes its like pulling teeth, isn't it?

Thank you so much for the lovely comments. I am so happy you enjoyed it.
