In 5th grade (back in 1963, when dinosaurs roamed) we had a student teacher who read us a chapter a day from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The story and the writing hooked me and all of my friends -- copies of the series were scarce as hen's teeth at the libraries from then on. I purchased a set of paperbacks a few years later and they pretty much fell apart with rereading over the years. Recently I picked up the one-volume paperback edition at Costco and it's sitting by my bed.

In short, I love C.S. Lewis's Narnia series, and Disney's new version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe does not disappoint. I saw it last night with [livejournal.com profile] gingersnapps and [livejournal.com profile] amyleone, and a theater full of other Lewis afficianados, and a good time was had by all. They were quite faithful to the book, and I particularly liked the fact that the pacing of the movie matched it. As much as I love the BBC version, which played on PBS when the kids were little, I think the integration of state-of-the-art CGI truly enhanced the viewing experience. It is a literary vision made real.

The PotCII trailer was also shown, to cheers and applause. It looked spectacular on the big screen! Come on, July!!

Speaking of PotC, my poor Muse has been bashed about of late and is trying to get a grip on something substantial. I am hoping this coming week will be much better than the last couple, and that I'll be able to work on some of those drabbles and ficlets that were requested on that meme. I am thinking about them, in a creative way, which is a good sign, and always the first step in the writing process for me. Soon. Hopefully by Christmas. But we'll see.

Outside lights are up, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] weemonkey6, I did the inside decorations last weekend (except for the tree, which we'll get on Thursday and decorate next weekend. This weekend it's cookies and cards. Must make out my shopping list.

Happy Holidays, all!

ETA:You must (MUST!) check out [livejournal.com profile] honorat's PotC new Zombie Muse inspired holiday doggerel, "Norrington Is Coming To Town" (and I daresay you can guess the tune it's sung to). Hilarious and brilliant!!

I am so pitiful. It is wrong that although I have no interest in seeing the Narnia film, I would spend the money to see the PotC trailer on the big screen?

Yeah, I guess it is.

No, actually it was a toss-up which I was more anxious to see (and I must have watched the trailer 25 or 30 times on my computer since the thing came out on the internet).

Btw, you really wanted J/W slashiness in your request for a drabble? I will certainly do my best to comply, though slash is not my forte, as you must know (at least to write - I do like reading well-written slash, of course).

Not knock-down, drag-out slashiness...but a little romantic tension wouldn't go amiss...but please feel free to write whatever! You are terribly kind to offer us drabbles for the holidays! I must say I never dislike anything you write; it's always so well-done, and so very believable.

LOL! You're not alone!
I actually kinda want to see Narnia, but now my decision is solidified by promise of POTCII trailer! Oh dear.....

Oh, I'm so glad to hear it. How violent would you say it is? I've heard things all over the map, and I fear that YK may be right on the edge of maturity for seeing it. She knows the story and loves it, she's sensitive but not excessively so, and she's ready for most PG fare at age 8. But is there a lot of blood and screaming from wounding? She handles 'epic battle' a la Lord of the Rings just fine, but individual torture is hard to handle. Is there character death not expected by one who has read the book several times?

We plan to try to catch a matinee on Tuesday.

It happens to all of us, and you've had PLENTY of good reason to have your creative energies sapped by RL events, of late. Sure! Go ahead and try to get things rolling again, because the writing process is a good thing. But if your muses are still not co-operating, you DO NOT have permission to beat yourself up about it, any more than if you had been in a car accident and healing your broken leg was frustrating your ability to walk again quickly.

Thank you for the kind words, Lin -- the encouragement is truly appreciated. It's been a really stressful time -- seems like it's all catching up with me at once. Thank goodness my daughters are here for me, too -- I'd really be a basket case without them.

Re: violence, battles -- I thought they handled it in a more subdued way than LotR, in fact [livejournal.com profile] torn_eledhwen was complaining about the lack of blood. But I think it's at the right level for little kids, and the Narnia books are kids books, much more so than LotR. The scene with Aslan/Witch & her cohorts/the Stone Table is handled nicely -- effecting, as it should be, but not too horrific, which was a relief.

I hope you had a WONDERFUL birthday, btw -- you kid, you!

Thank you for the birthday wishes, oh, ancient & wise one *snerk*! :-) It has been being a lovely one, yes. (I love when these things drag on for a while! Birthday season! *grin*)

Good to know that Narnia is appropriate for her age (as it should be). Sounds like it's just the right balance, and I appreciate a fellow-mom's perspective on it, for all your kids are well beyond the stage where you worry about the content of their movies.

And I'm so glad you have your kids to support you through this time, especially the holiday season aspect of things. Yay weemonkey for putting up the lights! The holidays are stressful no matter what. Be sure to take a moment to pamper yourself a little, now and then, and just let the logistics and arrangements and such, go. It will all be fine. Honestly.

Ha! Yes -- now they worry about the content of my movies! They know how easily I'm squicked by violence (especially of the torturous sort).

And Yay for Birthday Season -- that's as it should be!

The battle could be a bit scary but if she can handle LOTR she might not mind. Not much blood although she might not like the part where Edmund and the White Witch are fighting.

the part where Edmund and the White Witch are fighting

Ah, yes. I forgot that. And he is wounded, of course, with attendant drama (although no visible blood), but Lucy takes care of that fairly quickly.

They don't drag it out and that is nice.

The hardest scene for me was with the girls and Aslan on the Stone Table. I think I cried even when I read it in the book.

Whoohoo! They've done a good job with Narnia! I first read the books in fifth grade and since then I've worn out three sets. I love those stories and anything C.S. Lewis wrote (I have over 40 of his books). I can't wait to see it.

*Sends your muse a cold compress and a masseuse* Poor little muse. Give it a hug from me. *Hugs* for you too. I'm so glad you've got your daughters to help with the holidays.

Thanks so much for recc'ing my silliness. The parody muse seems determined to thrive. If it gives people laughs, that seems a worthy goal.

Your holiday doggerel muse has been a real bright spot for me all week, and I thank you most sincerely for that! And my muse appreciates the masseuse -- not sure about the cold compress, though. *shivers*

*hugs you back*

Well you know what they teach in first aid class--ice for bruises! But if the muse wants heat put it in the microwave! I'm plying the doggerel muse with virtual rum as we speak. *Must keep [livejournal.com profile] geek_mama_2 amused*

Glad to hear Narnia was good, I'm really looking forward to seeing it, but as usual, I have to wait a few more weeks before it premieres here.

However, according to Yahoo Movies, PotCII is premiering on July 5th over there -- two days before we get it!

Which strikes me as very odd, and I won't truly believe it until it's a fact, they might still change the date, after all... So, no need to be envious just yet :-)

Yes, they're so chageable about these things. But I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks again for the beta read/edit -- not too many repeated words this time! Maybe I'm improving!

I'm so glad to be hearing good things about this. I can't wait to see it (hopefully this weekend) - the trailer made me cry. I first read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when I was 7 and have been a Lewis fan ever since.
