Narnia, etc.
Dec. 10th, 2005 09:58 amIn 5th grade (back in 1963, when dinosaurs roamed) we had a student teacher who read us a chapter a day from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The story and the writing hooked me and all of my friends -- copies of the series were scarce as hen's teeth at the libraries from then on. I purchased a set of paperbacks a few years later and they pretty much fell apart with rereading over the years. Recently I picked up the one-volume paperback edition at Costco and it's sitting by my bed.
In short, I love C.S. Lewis's Narnia series, and Disney's new version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe does not disappoint. I saw it last night with
gingersnapps and
amyleone, and a theater full of other Lewis afficianados, and a good time was had by all. They were quite faithful to the book, and I particularly liked the fact that the pacing of the movie matched it. As much as I love the BBC version, which played on PBS when the kids were little, I think the integration of state-of-the-art CGI truly enhanced the viewing experience. It is a literary vision made real.
The PotCII trailer was also shown, to cheers and applause. It looked spectacular on the big screen! Come on, July!!
Speaking of PotC, my poor Muse has been bashed about of late and is trying to get a grip on something substantial. I am hoping this coming week will be much better than the last couple, and that I'll be able to work on some of those drabbles and ficlets that were requested on that meme. I am thinking about them, in a creative way, which is a good sign, and always the first step in the writing process for me. Soon. Hopefully by Christmas. But we'll see.
Outside lights are up, thanks to
weemonkey6, I did the inside decorations last weekend (except for the tree, which we'll get on Thursday and decorate next weekend. This weekend it's cookies and cards. Must make out my shopping list.
Happy Holidays, all!
You must (MUST!) check out
honorat's PotC new Zombie Muse inspired holiday doggerel, "Norrington Is Coming To Town" (and I daresay you can guess the tune it's sung to). Hilarious and brilliant!!

Date: 2005-12-10 07:01 pm (UTC)Btw, you really wanted J/W slashiness in your request for a drabble? I will certainly do my best to comply, though slash is not my forte, as you must know (at least to write - I do like reading well-written slash, of course).

Date: 2005-12-10 07:23 pm (UTC)Oh, I'm so glad to hear it. How violent would you say it is? I've heard things all over the map, and I fear that YK may be right on the edge of maturity for seeing it. She knows the story and loves it, she's sensitive but not excessively so, and she's ready for most PG fare at age 8. But is there a lot of blood and screaming from wounding? She handles 'epic battle' a la Lord of the Rings just fine, but individual torture is hard to handle. Is there character death not expected by one who has read the book several times?
We plan to try to catch a matinee on Tuesday.

It happens to all of us, and you've had PLENTY of good reason to have your creative energies sapped by RL events, of late. Sure! Go ahead and try to get things rolling again, because the writing process is a good thing. But if your muses are still not co-operating, you DO NOT have permission to beat yourself up about it, any more than if you had been in a car accident and healing your broken leg was frustrating your ability to walk again quickly.

I hope you had a WONDERFUL birthday, btw -- you kid, you!

Date: 2005-12-10 08:39 pm (UTC)oh, ancient & wise one *snerk*! :-) It has been being a lovely one, yes. (I love when these things drag on for a while! Birthday season! *grin*)Good to know that Narnia is appropriate for her age (as it should be). Sounds like it's just the right balance, and I appreciate a fellow-mom's perspective on it, for all your kids are well beyond the stage where you worry about the content of their movies.
And I'm so glad you have your kids to support you through this time, especially the holiday season aspect of things. Yay weemonkey for putting up the lights! The holidays are stressful no matter what. Be sure to take a moment to pamper yourself a little, now and then, and just let the logistics and arrangements and such, go. It will all be fine. Honestly.

Date: 2005-12-10 08:58 pm (UTC)Ha! Yes -- now they worry about the content of my movies! They know how easily I'm squicked by violence (especially of the torturous sort).
And Yay for Birthday Season -- that's as it should be!

Thanks so much for recc'ing my silliness. The parody muse seems determined to thrive. If it gives people laughs, that seems a worthy goal.

Thanks again for the beta read/edit -- not too many repeated words this time! Maybe I'm improving!
