To my 5/27 comment that I loved Jack speaking Latin at the Brethren Council. Educated!Jack is one of my favorite things in nature, an anonymous benefactor has replied, I know what Jack said!! We have movies with subtitles and the Latin part was in subtitles too; he said "Res ipsa loquitur" - "The thing speaks for itself". I also love educated Jack :)

*ponders indisputable truth of icon*

ETA: Our anonymous benefactor further states: I've just found an informaton that Hunter S. Thompson frequently used the Latin phrase to end some of his gonzo journalistic political pieces. Looks like another Johnny's inside joke ;)

ETA: See [livejournal.com profile] gott1172's comment below for the complete phrase and translation!

Johnny's inside jokes make me happy...because, you know, he's pretty and all, but I also love his brain.

And educated!Jack. I love him for giving us educated!Jack. (I also noticed Jack's very fluent reading of the Code, which pleased me excessively. Literate!Jack is now canon, thank you...)

Yes! That could always be written either way, before, as though all that verbage was just parroted from people he'd encountered through the years.

he's pretty and all, but I also love his brain.

I don't think we'd pay all that much attention if it wasn't for that -- there are a lot of pretty people in the world, but few of them are really interesting.

Hee! Glad someone could help with the transcription, because between his "Jack-ccent" and the speed at which he speaks, I couldn't even figure out the Latin words he was saying! Yay! *hugs the Latin*

I'm still on the fence about the title on the front of the "Pirates' Code." The Latin reads "Pirata Codex." A codex, is, of course, a book, so that's funnily accurate, as the "Code" is in fact kept in the form of a gigantic book. The problem I have is that in Latin, "Pirata Codex" is a nonsense phrase; it literally means "Pirate. Book." In order for it to mean what the Brethren want it to mean, "pirata" has to be in the genitive plural form, thus: "Codex piratarum"--literally, "Book of pirates".

So...Jack got his Latin spot on, but the title on the cover of the Pirates' Code itself is baaaaad Latin! Go Jacky!

I noticed that too! Pirate. Book. Presumably the pirate lords don't speak Latin as well as Jack! *g*

Doesn't it?

Also fun is that "pirata" is one of a handful of weird masculine nouns in the first declension, a declension made up almost entirely of feminine nouns!

So "pirata" is a boy noun...that very much resembles a girl noun!

Hee! ;)

I'd heard "Res ipsa loquitur" but I didn't catch the bit immediately afterwards because it was too fast. Your anonymous benefactor is spot on about the HST thing too, he did do that. (We had to read Fear and Loathing when I was doing my journalism course, and I liked it enough to try some of his other stuff. Brilliant writer, that man).

I must admit I'm rather looking forward to Johnny in the film adaptation of the Rum Diaries. Ought to be worth seeing.

Here is the entire phrase Jack speaks. I asked on one of the boards, and a very smart person had the answer. =)

And I quote:

"Res ipse loquitur tabula in naufragio."

Literally, it means: the thing speaks for itself, a plank on a shipwreck.

Both of those are legal terms, but when you put them together, it figuratively means, "Obviously, when you have nothing more to lose, you must try everything."

Delightful! Thanks for posting this - it was *way* too fast for me to catch.

Have been meaning to email you. Did you happen to read [livejournal.com profile] dollsome's meta post?
Yes, right after you rec'd it, and it is marvelous. Should go back and read it again since I've now actually seen the movie... What I told [livejournal.com profile] jenthegypsy was that it's a bit of a stretch, but I will accept that Jack's gonads could have talked him off the ship after all, he needs to go find Jack Shaftoe and convinced him that Gibbs would be able to protect his interests. Really could have done without the slaps, though, but the I lied to you speech was good. Oh, and they surely could have left out the Little Mermaid stuff as well.

But - !!! - (will look carefully when I go back, checking which side is clearly visible in various iterations) perhaps Cherished Notion of gold ring resting against tanned skin is not dashed to bits by canon! (and did you have trouble with overly-tattooed-shirtless-Jack's body being so vastly different from JD's? I found it extremely disconcerting)

Agreed, on both counts.

Oh, and they surely could have left out the Little Mermaid stuff as well.

Eh? What Little Mermaid stuff? (I am feeling particularly clueless here.)

did you have trouble with overly-tattooed-shirtless-Jack's body being so vastly different from JD's? I found it extremely disconcerting

Yes! I wonder if they'll explain how they did that scene on the dvd?

When I wrote my "review", I wanted to focus on all the good stuff as there were so many people focusing on its faults. I've seen it five times now, and still love the majority of it, but there are some little things, like the above, and of course the Big Thing that is the ending, with all its complicated, plot-holey angst.

I'd like to read any and all of your thoughts, and I need to go back and read Jen's, if she has them posted, too.
