A last drabble for the 'Fool' prompt, exactly 100 words of Davy Jones and Beckett, post-DMC. Thanks, again, to
hereswith for looking it over for me!
~ Fool of a Captain ~
“Jack Sparrow is dead!” Jones asserted, with relish.
“Is he?” Beckett raised an eyebrow. “You know, he’s damnably hard to kill. Do you have some evidence? His head, perhaps? Or some other bit I’d recognize?”
Jones seethed, though that would avail him nothing, thanks to Norrington. “The Black Pearl’s gone to the depths, and its fool of a captain with it!”
“Hmmm. And yet… the ship’s been raised before. By you.”
“For a price! We had a bargain. But no one escapes the Locker!”
Beckett laughed. “No one? And a bargain?” He shook his head. “Fool of a captain, indeed.”

Date: 2008-04-08 09:44 pm (UTC)"Who's the bigger fool?" might be an even more interesting question.
At this point, I think Jones was fooling himself, only because he wanted so desperately to believe that Sparrow was dead, and yet all evidence told him that the only thing for certain concerning Sparrow is that there is nothing for certain. The Black Pearl may have gone down...but there was the small matter of an empty chest.
Good examination of another missing scene!

Oh! Oh!! Beckett is so delightfully horrible (horribly delightful?)! *feels urgent need for someone to lock him in a room with Ben from Lost*
“Hmmm. And yet… the ship’s been raised before. By you.”
You've made me feel sorry for Davey Jones in a far different fashion than I do when he's pining for Calypso. Beckett's right, and there's no winning this argument for Jones.

Date: 2008-04-09 12:49 am (UTC)Delightfully horrible or horribly delightful, Beckett is the one true villain of the trilogy, and yes, one can't help feeling sorry for Davy Jones. I'm so glad you thought it worked!
Ben from Lost, eh? Hmmm...

Date: 2008-04-09 08:44 am (UTC)I love Beckett in this. He's soooo nasty, but I also detect a tiny hint that he doesn't quite want Jack to be dead. At least, not so soon or so easily - or without a chance to meet him again.

Date: 2008-04-09 04:15 pm (UTC)Yes, I think you're right. I think there's little doubt that he remembers earlier encounters with Jack fondly. *shudders*
I've sure been having fun with this 'fool' prompt. Glad you enjoyed this one!

Date: 2008-04-09 02:14 pm (UTC)My favourite line: “Hmmm. And yet… the ship’s been raised before. By you.” Perfect Beckett! :)
So many people seem to underestimate Jack, but *we* all know he's no fool! :)

Date: 2008-04-09 04:17 pm (UTC)Jack has made an art of getting people to underestimate him. Those that have had previous experience know better. Or should. ;)
