Happy New Year, and Another Drabble

Must zoom out to doing shopping and a movie and dinner somewhere, but first wanted to post one more piratey drabble for 2004...

Out of the Shadows

Deep in shadow he sat, staring out at the forest of masts. Breathing steady, eyes dry. Just cold, now, with anger, mostly. And with loss piled on loss.

Matthew Deveral, Master Cartographer. Jack cursed, and set his teeth. He'd finished taking abuse from a master now less skilled than himself! That was part of the problem, of course, though knowing it made no difference.

But Captain Murphy knew, too. That might make a difference.

Jack rose and stepped into the thin Bristol sunshine. Time to see if the Captain was a man of his word, and leave the shadows behind.

You must know that the original draft of POTC tells us Jack was a cartogrpaher who came into possession of the compass... or else you are psychic, anyway, nice little snapshot of Jack's younger years.

Very nicely drawn. The determined boy becoming a determined man. Love this view of him -- the cold anger, dry eyes and set of his teeth. Fierce!Jack in the making!
